The short version

  • Each has a real cost: Kaleris the portfolio was assembled by acquisition, so the single platform description is commercial rather than technical, and connecting two Kaleris products often requires professional services and a custom interface.; Kongsberg Vessel Insight vessel Insight is infrastructure, not insight; the applications that produce operational value are separate purchases, so the subscription buys a capability that shows a superintendent nothing on its own.
  • They diverge on capability: Kaleris covers Terminal operating system, Kongsberg Vessel Insight covers Onboard data collection unit.

What people use each for

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.

Kaleris

  • A container terminal replacing a legacy or in-house terminal operating system before an automation programmenot Kongsberg Vessel Insight
  • A port authority standardising several terminals on one operating system and reporting layernot Kongsberg Vessel Insight
  • An ocean carrier that needs stowage planning and vessel performance tooling alongside terminal systemsnot Kongsberg Vessel Insight
  • A rail or intermodal operator trying to reduce demurrage exposure with asset level visibilitynot Kongsberg Vessel Insight

Kongsberg Vessel Insight

  • A shipowner with a mixed fleet who wants one normalised data feed instead of a different data extract per engine makernot Kaleris
  • An owner who has stalled on digitalisation because nobody will own the satellite bandwidth costnot Kaleris
  • A manager wanting to run several third-party performance and emissions applications from one onboard installation rather than one box per vendornot Kaleris
  • A fleet already running Kongsberg automation where the onboard integration is straightforward rather than a bespoke engineering jobnot Kaleris

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

Kaleris

  • The portfolio was assembled by acquisition, so the single platform description is commercial rather than technical, and connecting two Kaleris products often requires professional services and a custom interface.
  • A terminal operating system implementation runs 12 to 24 months with parallel operation, and the software licence is a minor line next to integration, equipment interfaces and retraining crane and gate staff.
  • Private equity ownership means the roadmap is shaped by acquisition strategy and an eventual exit, and a terminal signing a decade-long dependency has no visibility of who the next owner will be.
  • Configuration expertise is concentrated in the vendor and a small consultancy pool, so terminals end up buying vendor services for changes an internal team should be able to make.
  • The strength is container handling, and bulk, breakbulk and ro-ro terminals get a thinner functional fit that has to be closed with configuration and workarounds.

Kongsberg Vessel Insight

  • Vessel Insight is infrastructure, not insight; the applications that produce operational value are separate purchases, so the subscription buys a capability that shows a superintendent nothing on its own.
  • Pricing is per vessel per year and unpublished, which for a large fleet is a substantial committed annual cost with no benchmark available before entering a sales process.
  • Onboard installation has to fit a vessel's trading pattern, so a fleet rollout is measured in port calls and dry dockings rather than in weeks, and the subscription usually starts before the whole fleet is producing data.
  • The vessel data model is Kongsberg's, so migrating to a different data platform later means re-instrumenting every ship, not renegotiating a software contract.
  • Integration is easiest with Kongsberg equipment; on vessels with other makers' automation the collection scope and the engineering effort both increase, and what you can actually collect varies ship by ship.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

Kaleris: Is Kaleris the same thing as Navis?

No. Navis is the terminal operating system product line, now owned by Kaleris after Cargotec sold it to Accel-KKR in 2021. Kaleris is the parent group and sells several other product lines alongside it.

Kongsberg Vessel Insight: Does Vessel Insight include the satellite cost?

Yes. The subscription bundles onboard hardware and data transfer, which is the main reason owners choose it over building their own collection.

Kaleris: Who owns Kaleris?

It is backed by the private equity firm Accel-KKR and assembled from acquired software businesses.

Kongsberg Vessel Insight: Do I get performance analytics with it?

No. Analytics and reporting applications are bought separately from Kongsberg or from third parties on the Kognifai marketplace.

Kaleris: How long does a terminal operating system deployment take?

Plan for 12 to 24 months at a working container terminal, including parallel running. Anything shorter usually means a limited scope or a small facility.

Kongsberg Vessel Insight: Does it only work with Kongsberg equipment?

No, but integration is deepest there. On other makers' automation the collectable signal set and the installation effort both vary.

Kaleris: Does it suit bulk or breakbulk terminals?

Less well. The functional depth is in container handling, and other cargo types require significant configuration.

Kongsberg Vessel Insight: How is it priced?

Per vessel per year, quoted. Nothing is published, and installation timing depends on vessel availability.
