Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

AVImark

  • The owner markets a different cloud platform as its strategic product, so AVImark development is maintenance paced and buyers should expect a migration conversation rather than a long roadmap.
  • Meaningful capabilities including imaging, client communication and wellness plans are separately priced modules, so the quoted base licence understates what a working configuration costs.
  • It is Windows and server based, which pushes hardware, backup and IT support costs onto the practice and rules out browser or tablet use in the examination room.
  • The interface is keyboard driven and dated, which suits long-serving staff but slows new hires and makes onboarding relief staff harder.
  • Data lives in a local database with limited export tooling, so extracting a clean history when moving to another system is a paid conversion project rather than a download.

IDEXX Neo

  • The value depends on running IDEXX diagnostics, so a practice that later changes analyser or reference laboratory supplier loses the main reason it chose the software and faces two migrations instead of one.
  • Software pricing is often folded into a diagnostics purchase agreement, which makes it hard to see what the practice management system actually costs and harder still to compare it against a neutral vendor.
  • It is designed for small single-site practices, so multi-location groups quickly hit limits in reporting, consolidated inventory and cross-site records and are steered towards Cornerstone instead.
  • Reporting and inventory management are basic by design, so a practice that wants detailed production analysis by veterinary surgeon or tight stock control will need to export and work outside the system.
  • The third-party integration surface is narrower than open cloud systems, so specialist tools for communication, imaging or wellness plans may not connect without manual work.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

AVImark: Who owns AVImark now?

Covetrus, following its spin-out from Henry Schein in 2019 and its move to private ownership in 2022. It was originally a McAllister Software Systems product.

IDEXX Neo: Do I have to use IDEXX diagnostics?

No, but almost all the advantage of choosing Neo over a neutral cloud system comes from the IDEXX analyser and reference laboratory integration.

AVImark: Is AVImark being discontinued?

No announcement of that, but Covetrus positions Pulse as its cloud platform. Ask for written roadmap commitments before signing a multi-year agreement.

IDEXX Neo: How is Neo different from Cornerstone?

Cornerstone is the older on-premise product for larger and multi-site hospitals, with much deeper inventory and reporting. Neo is cloud, simpler and aimed at small practices.

AVImark: Can AVImark be run in the cloud?

Only by hosting it on a remote Windows server. It is not a browser application.

IDEXX Neo: Is pricing published?

No. It is quoted per practice and is frequently negotiated alongside diagnostics commitments, so ask for the software price as a standalone figure.

AVImark: Is it cheaper than cloud practice management systems?

On licence cost yes, but add server, backup, IT support and paid modules before making the comparison.

IDEXX Neo: Can I export my records if I leave?

Data extracts are available on request, but plan the extract and test it before you commit, because migration off a diagnostics-linked system is usually a bigger project than expected.
