Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Blackbaud Grantmaking
- No pricing is published at any tier, and Blackbaud contracts commonly run multiple years, so a foundation that finds the fit wrong is locked in past the point where switching is cheap.
- Implementation and data migration from a legacy GIFTS or Access database are separately priced professional services and regularly exceed the first year licence.
- The interface carries a long lineage and feels dated next to newer grants platforms, which shows up as training time for programme staff and reluctance among occasional users.
- Value depends heavily on being inside the Blackbaud stack; a foundation running Sage or NetSuite for accounting loses the integration that is the main commercial argument for the product.
- Blackbaud disclosed a ransomware incident in 2020 affecting customer backups and later settled with US regulators, so due diligence teams at some funders now require additional security review before approving the vendor.
Give Lively
- Eligibility is limited to US 501(c)(3) organisations, so charities registered in the UK, Canada, Australia or the EU cannot use it at all regardless of fit.
- The platform is funded by its founders' personal philanthropy rather than by revenue, so there is no contractual commitment to a roadmap or a service level and no paying customer base to keep it alive if that funding stops.
- Support is email based with no paid escalation tier, so an organisation mid-campaign with a broken form has no way to buy faster attention.
- The donor database is adequate for gift tracking but thin compared with a real CRM, so most organisations still pay for Bloomerang, DonorPerfect or Salesforce alongside it and maintain a sync.
- Optional donor tips appear at checkout to fund the platform, which some boards object to because it puts a second ask in front of a donor who has already decided what to give.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Blackbaud Grantmaking: Is this the same as GIFTS Online?
Yes, in lineage. It comes from MicroEdge GIFTS, which Blackbaud acquired in 2014, and has been rebranded and reworked since.
Give Lively: Is it genuinely free, or free with a percentage taken?
Genuinely free. Give Lively takes no cut of donations and charges no subscription. You pay only the card processing fee, which goes to Stripe, Shift4 or PayPal, starting around 1.99% plus $0.25.
Blackbaud Grantmaking: What does it cost?
Blackbaud does not publish grantmaking pricing. Expect a quoted annual subscription plus a separate implementation and migration fee, and expect a multi-year term to be proposed.
Give Lively: How does the company make money?
It does not, in the ordinary sense. Operating costs are covered by its founders as a philanthropic commitment, plus voluntary tips donors can add at checkout.
Blackbaud Grantmaking: Do we need Financial Edge to get value?
No, but the general ledger integration is the strongest single reason to choose it. Without Financial Edge, compare it more carefully against Foundant and SmartSimple.
Give Lively: Can a UK or Canadian charity use it?
No. Give Lively requires US 501(c)(3) status.
Blackbaud Grantmaking: Does it verify charity status automatically?
Yes for US grantees, using charity status data as part of due diligence screening before payment.
Give Lively: Does it replace a donor CRM?
Not for most organisations. It stores donors and gift history, but fundraisers running major gift or grant pipelines usually keep a dedicated CRM and sync to it.
