Zebra BI

Zebra BI is a set of visuals and add-ins from a Slovenian company that replace the default charts in Power BI, Excel and PowerPoint with layouts following IBCS notation: consistent variance bars, actual against plan against forecast, small multiples, waterfalls and integrated commentary. The point is that a management report built this way reads identically whichever department produced it, which is the argument finance teams make when they standardise reporting. The commercially decisive fact is the licensing model. Licences cover a number of users and all users need one, designers and viewers alike; only anonymous viewers of publicly published reports are exempt. The Power BI Starter tier covers ten users at around fifty dollars a month billed annually, and the Business tier covers fifty users at roughly three hundred and sixteen dollars a month. Organisations that assume they are buying two analyst seats discover at rollout that circulating the report to the leadership team requires the next bracket. Office and Power BI are also licensed separately, so a team that wants Excel and Power BI buys twice. Buyers are corporate FP&A and controlling functions, disproportionately in German-speaking Europe where IBCS has the strongest following. The trade off is rigidity: Zebra BI deliberately restricts chart choices to enforce the standard, which is the whole value for a controlling function and an irritation for anyone doing exploratory or marketing analytics.
