Travel reviews and booking app whose revenue comes from advertising and referral commissions to hotels and OTAs
As of 1 September 2026, TripAdvisor is free to use. A traveller reviews app covering hotels, restaurants and attractions, free to browse, that makes its money from advertising, sponsored placement and referral commissions when users click through to book on a hotel or OTA site. Softwr lists it under Travel. TripAdvisor is made by Tripadvisor, Inc., available on iOS, Android, Web.
Overview
TripAdvisor lets travellers read and write reviews of hotels, restaurants and attractions, compare hotel prices aggregated from OTAs and hotel direct sites, and browse traveller photos and forums for destination advice. Its own Viator brand handles tours and activities bookings directly. Its revenue comes from a mix of display and sponsored placement advertising sold to hotels and tourism boards, and referral commissions or cost-per-click fees when a user clicks through to book on a listed OTA or hotel site. Businesses can also pay for enhanced listing features. TripAdvisor has faced sustained criticism and, in some markets, regulatory scrutiny over fake reviews, both positive reviews solicited or purchased by businesses and negative reviews planted by competitors, and it runs its own fraud detection systems, though the scale of user-generated review content on a global platform makes this an ongoing rather than solved problem. Buyers are travellers researching hotels, restaurants or attractions before booking elsewhere, since the actual purchase usually completes on a linked OTA, hotel site or, for tours, TripAdvisor's own Viator. The trade-off is a large volume of user reviews with genuine value, weighed against a ranking and advertising system that is not purely neutral and a review authenticity problem it cannot fully police.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about TripAdvisor.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for TripAdvisor, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it. Tell us if any of it is wrong.
