Overview
Thought Machine builds Vault Core, a cloud native core banking platform, and Vault Payments for payment processing. Its architecture point is genuine: financial products are defined as smart contracts written in Python, executed by the core, so a bank's product team can build and test a new deposit or lending product without waiting on the vendor's release cycle. It runs on Kubernetes on public cloud, is API first, and has no batch overnight processing in the traditional sense. What a buyer must understand is that the technology is the easy half. Core banking replacement means migrating accounts, balances, interest accruals, general ledger postings, statements, regulatory reporting and every downstream integration, usually with a period of running old and new cores in parallel. Realistic timelines are eighteen months at the very fastest for a greenfield digital bank on a narrow product set, and two to four years for a phased migration at an established bank. Most large banks choose a greenfield or new brand approach precisely because migrating the back book is the part that fails. Customers include Lloyds Banking Group, Standard Chartered, JPMorgan Chase's Chase UK brand and a number of digital banks. The trade offs: cost is enterprise scale and quoted per institution, usually on accounts or annual value; the smart contract model requires engineering capability that many banks do not have in house, pushing them to system integrators whose fees exceed the licence; and Thought Machine had two rounds of job cuts as it pushed for profitability, which is a supplier stability question for a system a bank will run for fifteen years.
