Shein: If you want a marketplace focused specifically on apparel rather than general merchandise

Ultra-low-cost general merchandise marketplace owned by PDD Holdings, parent of Pinduoduo
As of 1 September 2026, Temu is free to use. A general merchandise marketplace shipping cheap goods directly from Chinese manufacturers and sellers, aggressively marketed through paid social advertising and referral incentives. Softwr lists it under E-Commerce. Temu is made by Whaleco Inc. (a subsidiary of PDD Holdings), available on iOS, Android, Web.
Overview
Temu sells a very wide catalogue of low-cost goods, apparel, electronics accessories, home items and novelty products, most shipped directly to buyers from manufacturers and sellers in China. It launched in the US in 2022 and expanded rapidly to dozens of markets, funded by heavy paid advertising and gamified referral schemes that reward users with discounts and bonus items for inviting others or completing in-app tasks. Ownership is the fact most buyers do not know. Temu is operated by Whaleco Inc., a subsidiary of PDD Holdings, the Chinese-founded, now Ireland-domiciled parent company that also runs Pinduoduo, a major Chinese domestic shopping app. That lineage has drawn scrutiny from security researchers and app store reviewers over the extent of data and device permissions Temu and the earlier versions of Pinduoduo requested, and from regulators over whether pricing and discount claims shown to shoppers are accurate. Like Shein, some products sold on Temu have been flagged by consumer safety testing for exceeding legal limits on substances such as lead in specific items, and shipments have faced customs scrutiny in the US and EU as duty-free import thresholds have tightened. Buyers are price-driven shoppers willing to accept long shipping times, typically one to two weeks or more, and limited buyer protection in exchange for very low prices, and the trade-off is the same one that applies to Shein: the price is low partly because of thin margins for suppliers and light regulatory compliance overhead, both of which have drawn documented criticism.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Temu.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.
