SDL Trados Studio

Windows desktop CAT tool that agencies treat as the default exchange format

As of 30 August 2026, SDL Trados Studio's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. The desktop translation environment most language service providers standardise on, now sold by RWS after it acquired SDL in 2020. Softwr lists it under Translation. SDL Trados Studio is made by RWS Holdings, available on Windows, Web.

Overview

What SDL Trados Studio does

Trados Studio is a computer assisted translation tool that runs on Windows. It segments source documents, matches each segment against a translation memory, applies terminology from a term base, and produces bilingual sdlxliff files that go back through the same pipeline. It handles the file preparation work that a browser based translation management system usually hides: filter settings per format, tag protection, alignment of legacy documents into memories, and pseudo-translation checks. The fact that changes a shortlist is ownership. SDL was acquired by RWS in 2020, which put the tool inside the same group as one of the largest language service providers in the world. The desktop product continues, but the roadmap now runs alongside the RWS cloud platform, and the sales motion has shifted towards subscriptions and the Trados Team and Enterprise cloud tiers. The perpetual desktop licence still exists, and it still excludes future major versions, so a buyer who wants to stay current is on a repeat purchase cycle whether or not it is called a subscription. The buyers are freelance translators who need to accept agency packages and language service providers whose entire workflow assumes Studio file formats. The trade-off is platform: it is Windows only, the interface has decades of accumulated options, and collaboration requires the paid cloud or server layer on top.

What people use it for

  • Freelance translators who must open and return agency supplied Studio packages
  • Language service providers running multi-vendor projects with shared memories and term bases
  • Regulated translation work where segment level memory matches must be auditable
  • Translating formats such as InDesign or structured XML where tag handling is the hard part

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about SDL Trados Studio.

  • It runs on Windows only, so macOS translators pay for a virtual machine or a second computer before they can accept work.
  • A perpetual licence covers the version you bought, and each major release is a further purchase, so the total cost over five years resembles a subscription without being described as one.
  • The learning curve is long: project settings, filters and memory configuration have to be understood before quality output is possible, which makes casual use impractical.
  • Memories and projects are local by default, and real collaboration needs GroupShare or the cloud tiers at extra cost, so two translators sharing one memory is a paid upgrade.
  • Third party plugins from the app store are maintained by their authors and frequently stop working after a major Studio release, which strands workflows that depend on them.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is it still called SDL Trados?

The product is now sold as Trados Studio by RWS, which acquired SDL in 2020. Older documentation and job adverts still say SDL Trados.

Do I need it if my clients use a cloud TMS?

Often yes. Agencies still send Studio packages, and accepting them without the tool means manual conversion and lost memory matches.

Can I run it on a Mac?

Not natively. Translators use Parallels, Boot Camp on older hardware, or a Windows virtual desktop.
