What MinIO does

MinIO is an object storage server that implements the S3 API and runs on your own hardware, from a single binary on a laptop to erasure coded clusters across racks. It is written in Go, deploys as a container or systemd unit, and became the default way to get an S3 endpoint inside a private network, a CI pipeline or a Kubernetes cluster. The fact that should change a shortlist is licensing and packaging. MinIO moved from Apache 2.0 to AGPL v3 in 2021, which imposes network copyleft on anyone who builds a service around it and has led several vendors to remove it from their stacks. In 2025 the company stripped most management capability out of the community edition web console, leaving object browsing and pushing user, policy and configuration management to the command line client or to the commercial product, now sold as AIStor. Anyone who deployed MinIO expecting an Apache licensed server with a full admin UI is not running that product any more. Buyers are platform teams who need an S3 endpoint inside a boundary, plus test and CI environments that want S3 semantics without a cloud account. The trade-off is that the free path is now deliberately narrower than the paid one, and the vendor has demonstrated twice that it will change the terms of the free path, so treating MinIO as permanent infrastructure carries a policy risk rather than a technical one.

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about MinIO.

The AGPL v3 licence applies copyleft over network use, so embedding MinIO in a product or hosted service obliges you to release your own source or buy a commercial licence, and legal review has removed it from several vendor stacks for this reason alone.
The community edition console was reduced in 2025 to an object browser, so user, policy, bucket and configuration management now happen through the mc command line client or through the paid product, which is a real operational regression for teams that trained staff on the UI.
The vendor has changed the terms of the free edition twice, so planning long lived infrastructure around the community build carries the risk that the next change removes something you depend on.
Erasure coded deployments cannot be grown by adding single drives; capacity is added in server pools, so expansion is a hardware purchase in units rather than an incremental one.
Commercial pricing is capacity based and aimed at large deployments, so a team that outgrows the community edition faces an enterprise sized quote rather than a graduated upgrade path.

Yes, the AGPL v3 server remains available and functional. What changed is the console, which no longer manages users, policies or configuration in the community build.

Does AGPL affect me if I only use it internally?

Internal use without offering the software over a network to third parties generally does not trigger the source obligation, but if MinIO forms part of a service you offer to others, it does. Take advice rather than a forum answer.

What replaced the community console features?
