As of 31 August 2026, MinIO is free to use. The default self hosted S3 server for a decade, written in Go and deployable as a single binary. Softwr lists it under File Storage. MinIO is made by MinIO Inc, available on Linux, macOS, Windows, Kubernetes.
Overview
MinIO is an object storage server that implements the S3 API and runs on your own hardware, from a single binary on a laptop to erasure coded clusters across racks. It is written in Go, deploys as a container or systemd unit, and became the default way to get an S3 endpoint inside a private network, a CI pipeline or a Kubernetes cluster. The fact that should change a shortlist is licensing and packaging. MinIO moved from Apache 2.0 to AGPL v3 in 2021, which imposes network copyleft on anyone who builds a service around it and has led several vendors to remove it from their stacks. In 2025 the company stripped most management capability out of the community edition web console, leaving object browsing and pushing user, policy and configuration management to the command line client or to the commercial product, now sold as AIStor. Anyone who deployed MinIO expecting an Apache licensed server with a full admin UI is not running that product any more. Buyers are platform teams who need an S3 endpoint inside a boundary, plus test and CI environments that want S3 semantics without a cloud account. The trade-off is that the free path is now deliberately narrower than the paid one, and the vendor has demonstrated twice that it will change the terms of the free path, so treating MinIO as permanent infrastructure carries a policy risk rather than a technical one.
