Overview
OpenTelemetry is a vendor-neutral standard and toolkit for generating traces, metrics and logs. It exists to solve a specific commercial problem: instrumentation used to be written against a vendor’s agent, so changing observability provider meant re-instrumenting every service. OpenTelemetry separates the two. Applications emit data through OTel SDKs, a collector receives and processes it, and exporters send it wherever you choose — Datadog, Grafana, Honeycomb, New Relic or a self-hosted stack. Switching backend becomes a collector configuration change rather than a code migration. It is the second most active CNCF project after Kubernetes.
