The short version
- Each has a real cost: Nomad Sculpt polygon budgets are bounded by tablet memory, so a base-model device stalls at a fraction of the detail a desktop sculpting application handles, and the ceiling only becomes apparent once a sculpt is well underway.; ZBrush subscription model required; no perpetual licence option available
- They diverge on capability: Nomad Sculpt covers Voxel remesh, ZBrush covers Digital sculpting.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 31 August 2026.

Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Nomad Sculpt
- Polygon budgets are bounded by tablet memory, so a base-model device stalls at a fraction of the detail a desktop sculpting application handles, and the ceiling only becomes apparent once a sculpt is well underway.
- One developer maintains it, so a bug that blocks your workflow waits on one person with no support channel to escalate through.
- There is no serious retopology or UV unwrapping toolset, so anything destined for a game or animation pipeline has to leave for a desktop package regardless.
- Rendering is presentation grade rather than production grade, so client-facing images generally need an export to a desktop renderer.
- Sculpt layers and brushes are application-specific and the route out is OBJ, glTF or STL, so layered non-destructive data does not survive the transfer to another tool.
ZBrush
- Subscription model required; no perpetual licence option available
- iPad version requires separate subscription to ZBrush for iPad

Questions people ask
- Is Nomad Sculpt or ZBrush better?
- Neither clearly leads. Nomad Sculpt starts at On request and ZBrush at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Nomad Sculpt or ZBrush?
- Nomad Sculpt starts at On request and ZBrush at On request.
- Does Nomad Sculpt or ZBrush run on more platforms?
- Nomad Sculpt runs on iOS, Android. ZBrush runs on Windows, macOS, iPadOS.
- What is Nomad Sculpt best used for?
- Nomad Sculpt is most often used for producing concept sculpts away from a workstation without carrying a laptop, creating 3d printing masters on a tablet and exporting stl directly, teaching sculpting fundamentals where per-seat desktop licences are not affordable, sketching character and creature forms that are finished later in a desktop package. Of those, producing concept sculpts away from a workstation without carrying a laptop and creating 3d printing masters on a tablet and exporting stl directly are not what ZBrush is typically brought in for.
- What can Nomad Sculpt do that ZBrush cannot?
- Nomad Sculpt covers Voxel remesh, Multiresolution, Dynamic topology, Layers. ZBrush covers Digital sculpting, Dynamesh, ZRemesher, PolyPaint.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Nomad Sculpt: Is it a subscription?
No. It is a one-time app store purchase with no account and no cloud service behind it.
ZBrush: What is included in a ZBrush subscription?
Every ZBrush subscription includes ZBrush on desktop, iPad, and Windows on Arm devices with premium features, rendering with Redshift, ZBrush Classroom, and Cineversity training.
SourceNomad Sculpt: Which tablet should I buy for it?
Buy for memory rather than for processor. Sculpt detail is limited by RAM, so a higher-memory model raises the ceiling more than a faster chip does.
ZBrush: Is there a free trial available?
Yes. Download the Maxon App to start your 14-day free trial. Every trial includes ZBrush and the full Maxon One suite.
SourceNomad Sculpt: Can it replace ZBrush?
For sculpting itself it goes a long way. For high-density production sculpts, retopology, UVs and pipeline integration it does not.
ZBrush: Can I use ZBrush on multiple devices?
ZBrush licensing is dual platform, so you can run on desktop and iPad simultaneously or switch between them at any time.
