NATSvs
Apache Kafka

Apache Kafka: A durable replayable log with a large ecosystem, at much higher operational cost
Overview
NATS is an open-source messaging system and a CNCF-graduated project, built around a small, fast core. Base NATS is fire-and-forget publish-subscribe with no persistence, which is why it is measured in microseconds rather than milliseconds. JetStream adds streaming, persistence and exactly-once semantics on top when durability is needed. Its operational story is unusually light for a messaging system: a single binary, no external dependencies, and clustering that is genuinely simple to configure. That combination is what draws teams who find Kafka and RabbitMQ heavier than the problem.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about NATS.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

RabbitMQ: A general-purpose broker with richer routing, heavier than NATS but lighter than Kafka

Yes, open source and CNCF-graduated. Synadia sells a managed service.
Core NATS does not — it is fire-and-forget. JetStream adds persistence, streaming and replay when you need them.
NATS is far lighter and lower latency, and much simpler to run. Kafka is the answer when you need a durable replayable log and a large connector ecosystem.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for NATS, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
