KakaoTalk

The default messaging app in South Korea, bundled with payments, taxi hailing and other Kakao services

As of 1 September 2026, KakaoTalk is free to use. Effectively required software for anyone living in or doing business in South Korea, comparable to how WeChat functions in China. Softwr lists it under Communication. KakaoTalk is made by Kakao Corp, available on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS.

Overview

What KakaoTalk does

KakaoTalk is a free messaging app with group chat, voice and video calling, and Plus Friend business accounts that brands use to message customers. It sits at the centre of the wider Kakao ecosystem, which includes KakaoPay for payments, KakaoT for taxi and mobility booking, KakaoBank as an internet-only bank, and a digital gifting product that is a genuinely large business in its own right in Korea. The fact that changes a shortlist is market concentration: KakaoTalk is the default messenger for the overwhelming majority of South Korean smartphone users, and there is no realistic substitute inside the country. That gives Kakao Corp a data position across chat, payments, banking and mobility that few single companies hold anywhere else, and it makes KakaoTalk business accounts close to mandatory for any company selling to Korean consumers, similar in kind, though not in scale, to WeChat in China. Buyers of this fact are businesses entering the Korean market who need a Plus Friend account to reach customers, and individuals or companies assessing how much of their communication, payment and travel data sits inside one Korean conglomerate.

What people use it for

  • A business entering the South Korean consumer market that needs a Plus Friend account to message customers
  • An individual living in South Korea who needs the app almost everyone else there uses by default
  • A brand running a digital gifting campaign through KakaoTalk during a Korean holiday period
  • A company integrating KakaoPay as a checkout option for Korean customers

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about KakaoTalk.

  • KakaoTalk has minimal relevance outside South Korea, so it is the wrong tool for reaching audiences anywhere else.
  • Standard chats are not end to end encrypted by default; a Secret Chat mode with encryption exists but must be turned on per conversation.
  • Concentration of messaging, payments, banking and mobility data inside one company creates a single point of both convenience and risk that has drawn scrutiny from Korean regulators.
  • Plus Friend business messaging costs scale with volume, so a company messaging its full Korean customer base regularly can face a meaningful recurring bill.
  • A 2022 data centre fire caused a multi-day outage across KakaoTalk and related Kakao services, which showed how much everyday activity in Korea depends on a single provider staying online.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is KakaoTalk free?

Yes to download and for standard messaging and calling. Emoticons, gifting and business messaging are paid.

Is KakaoTalk encrypted by default?

No, standard chats are not end to end encrypted by default. A separate Secret Chat mode offers encryption but has to be enabled per chat.

Do I need KakaoTalk to do business in South Korea?

Not legally, but a very large share of Korean consumers expect to interact with businesses through a Plus Friend account, so most consumer brands operating there use one.
