WeChat

Chinese super-app combining messaging, payments, mini programs and identity, effectively required infrastructure in mainland China

As of 1 September 2026, WeChat is free to use. Not a messaging app in the Western sense. Softwr lists it under Communication. WeChat is made by Tencent Holdings, available on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS.

Overview

What WeChat does

WeChat, run by Tencent, started as a messaging app but has become the layer through which most daily transactions happen in mainland China. Chat sits alongside WeChat Pay, a payments system used for everything from splitting a restaurant bill to paying utility bills, and mini programs, lightweight apps that run inside WeChat itself so businesses, government offices and services do not need a separate app. Official accounts give brands and institutions a one-way or interactive channel to subscribers. The distinguishing fact is that WeChat is not optional infrastructure for a resident of mainland China; taxis, hospitals, school notices, restaurant ordering and person-to-person payments commonly run through it, and there is no realistic substitute app with comparable reach. That gives Tencent visibility into an unusually wide slice of a users daily life, all of it subject to Chinese data localisation and content moderation law, including account suspension for content that falls foul of local rules. Outside China, the international version, Weixin overseas or WeChat, has a much narrower feature set and is used mainly for staying in touch with contacts inside China. Buyers of this fact are less individual consumers choosing a messenger and more businesses, journalists, and anyone communicating with contacts or partners in mainland China who need to understand that messages, payments and mini program activity are visible to and can be moderated by the platform and are subject to Chinese law, not the law of the users home country.

What people use it for

  • Staying in contact with friends, family or business partners based in mainland China
  • Paying for goods and services while travelling or living in China, where cash and card acceptance is limited
  • A business needing a mini program or official account to reach Chinese consumers directly
  • Coordinating logistics with China based suppliers who conduct business primarily through WeChat groups

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about WeChat.

  • Chat content, payments and mini program activity are subject to Chinese content moderation and data law, and accounts can be restricted or suspended for content that would be unremarkable elsewhere.
  • There is no meaningful end to end encryption on standard chat, so message content is not private from the platform in the way Signal or WhatsApp users might expect.
  • The international version has a materially reduced feature set compared to the domestic app, so overseas users cannot access the full payments and mini program ecosystem.
  • Real name registration is effectively required to use WeChat Pay, which ties financial activity to a verified identity.
  • Switching away is costly for anyone embedded in Chinese business or family networks, because contacts, payment history and mini program relationships do not transfer to another platform.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Can I use WeChat Pay outside China?

International cards can be linked in some markets but functionality and merchant acceptance are far more limited than inside mainland China.

Is WeChat free?

Messaging and calling are free. WeChat Pay charges a small fee on withdrawals to a bank card, and individual mini programs or merchants set their own prices for goods and services.
