Indeed

Job search app aggregating listings, owned by Recruit Holdings, the same parent as Glassdoor

As of 1 September 2026, Indeed is free to use. A free job search and application app aggregating listings from employer postings and other job boards, with employer-paid sponsored listings as the revenue model. Softwr lists it under Recruitment. Indeed is made by Indeed, Inc. (a Recruit Holdings company), available on iOS, Android, Web.

Overview

What Indeed does

Indeed lets job seekers search listings, filter by salary, location and job type, apply directly or via one-click apply where enabled, upload a resume, set job alerts and, in some markets, take skills assessments that appear on a profile. It is free to job seekers. The business model is entirely employer-side: companies post jobs for free with limited visibility, or pay for sponsored placement that moves a listing higher in search results and extends how long it stays prominent, priced on a pay-per-click or pay-per-application basis set by employer budget rather than a fixed rate card. Indeed is owned by Recruit Holdings, the Japanese company that also owns Glassdoor, which means the two products job seekers often use together, one for listings and one for company reviews, sit under the same corporate parent rather than being fully independent checks on each other. Buyers, meaning job seekers, pay nothing directly. The trade-off is the usual free-to-user, paid-to-business model: search ranking is influenced by which employers are paying for sponsored placement, and account data such as resume and application history is used by Indeed's own products and shared with employers a seeker applies to.

What people use it for

  • Searching and filtering job listings across many employers and other job boards in one place
  • Applying to multiple jobs quickly using a saved Indeed resume via one-click apply
  • Setting alerts for new postings matching a specific role, location or salary range
  • Checking aggregated salary estimates for a role before an interview or negotiation

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Indeed.

  • Search ranking is influenced by which employers pay for sponsored placement, so prominent listings are not purely a match to relevance or seeker preference.
  • It shares the same parent company, Recruit Holdings, as Glassdoor, so treating the two as fully independent sources of employer information overstates their independence from each other.
  • Listing quality varies widely since postings are aggregated from many sources, and duplicate, expired or low-quality listings are a common complaint.
  • One-click apply can encourage high volume, low-tailoring applications, which employers increasingly filter out with their own screening tools regardless of Indeed's reach.
  • Resume and application data uploaded to Indeed is used across its own products and shared with employers a user applies to, which is the trade for the free service.

What people choose instead of Indeed

Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Indeed, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
