Filevine

Configurable case management for plaintiff litigation, intake and mass tort firms

As of 30 August 2026, Filevine's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. Filevine treats a case as a configurable project template rather than a fixed matter record, which is why contingency-fee litigation shops adopt it and transactional firms rarely do. Softwr lists it under Legal. Filevine is made by Filevine, Inc., available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What Filevine does

Filevine is a cloud case management system for United States litigation firms, built in Salt Lake City and in use across personal injury, mass tort, workers compensation, immigration and criminal defence practices. It combines matter records, deadlines, tasks, texting, document assembly, e-signature through Vinesign and reporting in one workspace, with each practice area modelled as a project template that the firm defines itself. The differentiator is intake plus templating. Filevine acquired Lead Docket in 2021 and now sells the path from advertising response to signed client to settled file as one funnel, so marketing spend, intake conversion and case value sit in the same reporting layer. For a contingency firm this matters commercially: the numbers that decide whether a television or search campaign pays back live in the case system rather than a separate CRM. Document assembly and AI-drafted demand packages extend the same idea, generating paperwork from case fields instead of from a template library maintained by hand. Buyers are typically firms of ten to several hundred staff running high case volumes on contingency, backed by more than 100 million dollars of venture funding into the vendor and a matching enterprise sales motion. The trade-off is cost and effort. There is no built-in general ledger or trust accounting, so accounting runs in QuickBooks alongside; pricing is quoted per user with an implementation fee; and a firm that will not staff a Filevine administrator ends up with a half-configured system that its own fee earners work around.

What people use it for

  • A personal injury firm that wants advertising spend, intake conversion and settlement value reported in one place
  • A mass tort practice managing thousands of claimants against shared case phases and bulk document generation
  • A firm replacing spreadsheets and shared drives where each practice area has different deadline rules
  • An immigration or workers compensation practice that needs form-heavy document assembly from case data

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Filevine.

  • There is no built-in general ledger or three-way trust reconciliation, so the firm still pays for and reconciles QuickBooks separately, which undermines the single-system argument used during the sale.
  • Pricing is quoted per user with an implementation fee, so a firm with paralegals and case managers who log in occasionally pays full seat cost for light users.
  • Configuration flexibility becomes a liability without an internal owner, and firms that skip that role commonly end up with duplicate fields and reports nobody trusts.
  • It is built around contingency and litigation workflow, so corporate, conveyancing and other transactional practices find the project model a poor fit.
  • Implementation commonly runs weeks to months with paid professional services, and the annual contract starts before the firm is live, so the first year buys less usable time than it appears to.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Does Filevine handle trust accounting?

No. It tracks case costs and settlement disbursement but has no legal general ledger, so trust accounting is done in QuickBooks or a dedicated legal accounting product.

Is pricing published?

No. Filevine quotes per user per month on an annual contract and adds an implementation fee, so compare total first-year cost rather than the seat rate.

Is it suitable for a two-person firm?

Rarely. The configuration overhead and contract minimums suit firms with dedicated intake and case management staff.
