CosmoLex

Practice management with a full legal general ledger and trust accounting built in

As of 30 August 2026, CosmoLex starts at $89/month. CosmoLex is the small-firm practice management system that replaces QuickBooks rather than syncing with it, including three-way trust reconciliation in the core product. Softwr lists it under Legal. CosmoLex is made by CosmoLex (ProfitSolv), available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What CosmoLex does

CosmoLex is a cloud practice management system for small and mid-sized law firms in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, covering matters, time capture, billing, payments, calendaring, documents and accounting. It was founded in New Jersey in 2013 and sells mainly to firms of one to twenty fee earners. The distinguishing property is accounting. Most competitors record billing and then push data to QuickBooks for the books; CosmoLex carries a full double-entry general ledger and client trust ledgers inside the same database, with three-way reconciliation of the trust bank account, the client ledger balances and the trust ledger. Commercially this removes a second subscription, a second vendor and the sync errors that produce trust discrepancies, which is the failure mode most likely to attract a bar complaint. For a firm without a bookkeeper it is the strongest reason to choose the product. Buyers are typically owner-run firms that want billing and books in one place at a predictable per-user price. Two trade-offs matter. The accounting is competent for a law firm but thinner than QuickBooks for anything unusual, such as multi-entity structures or payroll, which stays outside. And CosmoLex belongs to ProfitSolv, a private-equity backed group that also owns Tabs3, TimeSolv and Rocket Matter, so a buyer is choosing one brand from a portfolio of overlapping products whose long-term positioning is set by the group rather than by the product team.

What people use it for

  • A two to ten lawyer firm that wants to stop paying for and reconciling QuickBooks alongside its practice system
  • A firm that has failed or fears failing a bar trust account audit and needs three-way reconciliation as standard
  • A solo practice with no bookkeeper that needs the books to be correct without accounting knowledge
  • A firm doing insurer defence work that must produce LEDES invoices without a separate billing tool

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about CosmoLex.

  • The built-in accounting suits a single law firm entity, so practices with multiple entities, payroll or unusual revenue recognition still need an external accountant and a second system.
  • Document management is basic storage rather than versioned matter-centric DMS, so firms with heavy document workflow outgrow it and bolt on something else.
  • The integration catalogue is materially smaller than Clio, so niche intake, e-discovery or automation tools often require manual export instead of a native connection.
  • Ownership sits with ProfitSolv alongside Tabs3, TimeSolv and Rocket Matter, and buyers have limited visibility into which brand receives investment over a three-year contract.
  • The interface and reporting feel dated next to newer competitors, and custom reporting in particular often means exporting to a spreadsheet.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Do I still need QuickBooks?

No. CosmoLex carries its own general ledger and trust ledgers, which is the main reason firms choose it over Clio or MyCase.

Does it handle IOLTA compliance?

Yes. Trust ledgers, overdraft prevention and three-way reconciliation are in the core product rather than in a paid tier.

Who owns CosmoLex?

ProfitSolv, a private-equity backed group that also owns Tabs3, TimeSolv, ImagineTime and Rocket Matter.
