What Dockwa does
Dockwa runs reservations, slip assignment, billing and guest communication for marinas, harbours and yacht clubs in North America, alongside a consumer app where boaters search availability and book dockage directly. For the marina it is a management system: dockmasters handle transient and seasonal reservations, assign slips, take payments, run occupancy reporting and communicate with arriving vessels. For the boater it is a booking channel, and Dockwa contractually requires that marinas do not charge boaters more for booking through it than for calling the office. The distinguishing thing is that two-sided structure. Unlike a pure marina management system, Dockwa brings demand as well as software, which is the argument for accepting its transaction economics. The marina typically pays card processing around 2.5 per cent plus a service fee of roughly 1 per cent on bookings taken through the platform, and higher-tier capability, including the revenue management module, is sold as an additional monthly subscription in the region of a few hundred dollars. Buyers are transient-heavy marinas and harbours on the United States east coast, Great Lakes and Florida, where Dockwa demand is concentrated. The trade-off is dependence. A marina that fills through Dockwa is paying a percentage on revenue it might have captured directly, and the platform pricing has drifted from purely transactional toward an annual software fee plus transaction costs, which is a change of shape rather than a change of rate. Marinas outside the strong North American corridors get the software without much of the demand.
