Overview

What Clumio does

Clumio protects Amazon Web Services workloads including S3, DynamoDB, RDS and Aurora, EC2 and EBS, DocumentDB, Neptune and Apache Iceberg tables. It runs as a service with no backup infrastructure in the customer account, writes air-gapped immutable copies outside the customer AWS account, and supports point-in-time restore at fifteen-minute granularity. Commvault acquired Clumio in 2024 and it is now sold as Clumio by Commvault. The distinguishing fact is pricing transparency, and specifically that it prices restores. For S3 SecureVault Standard, backups are $0.025 per GiB-month plus $1.50 per million managed objects per month, and restores are $0.040 per GiB restored for instant access, $2.00 per million managed objects-month, $0.09 per GiB retrieved and $0.025 per 1,000 API requests, with data transfer out charged on top. SecureVault Archive halves storage to $0.010 per GiB-month but restores begin only after 24 to 48 hours and early deletion inside six months incurs a fee. Most backup vendors never mention restore costs, which is how organisations discover during an incident that recovering fifty terabytes carries a five-figure bill. Buyers are AWS-native organisations with compliance requirements for immutable off-account backups. The trade-off is scope: this is an AWS product. Azure workloads are on the roadmap rather than available, so it is not the answer for a multi-cloud estate.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Clumio.

Restore is charged at $0.040 per GiB plus data transfer out, so recovering a hundred terabytes in an incident costs thousands of dollars on top of the storage fee, a bill nobody budgets for.
Per-object charges of $1.50 per million managed objects per month mean estates with billions of small objects pay far more than a per-gigabyte estimate suggests.
The archive tier is cheaper to store but restores begin only after 24 to 48 hours, which is incompatible with most recovery time objectives, and early deletion inside six months incurs a fee.
It is an AWS product; Azure workloads are on the roadmap rather than shipping, so multi-cloud organisations still need a second backup platform.
The Commvault acquisition means Clumio now overlaps with Commvault own cloud protection, and buyers should ask directly how the two portfolios converge before signing multi-year terms.
