Brightcove

Enterprise video hosting, live streaming and monetisation, now owned by Bending Spoons

As of 31 August 2026, Brightcove's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. Brightcove hosts and streams video for broadcasters, media companies and large marketing teams, priced on plays, bandwidth and storage rather than a flat licence. Softwr lists it under Video Production. Brightcove is made by Brightcove, Inc., a Bending Spoons company, available on Web, iOS, Android, TV and console.

Overview

What Brightcove does

Brightcove is an online video platform for organisations that stream at scale: video hosting and encoding, an adaptive player, live and event streaming, server-side ad insertion, subscription and pay-per-view monetisation, digital rights management, an OTT app framework and analytics. It is used by broadcasters, publishers, sports bodies, and by large corporate marketing and internal communications teams that need video governed centrally rather than uploaded to a public platform. The fact that should change a shortlist is ownership. Bending Spoons acquired Brightcove for 233 million US dollars, closing in February 2025, and delisted it from Nasdaq. In November 2025 the same company completed a 1.38 billion dollar acquisition of Vimeo. Bending Spoons has an established pattern with acquired software: sharp cost reduction, headcount reduction and price increases on the existing customer base. A buyer running a Brightcove versus Vimeo comparison in 2026 is choosing between two products owned by one firm that has publicly built its business on raising monetisation of acquired assets, which is a materially different risk picture from the one either brand had in 2023. Pricing is quoted, not published, and is driven by video plays, bandwidth consumed and storage held, with reported annual spend across the customer base ranging from the low tens of thousands to well into six figures. That usage-based shape is the real trap: the licence line in the contract is not the cost, the delivery is, and a piece of content that unexpectedly gets traffic produces a bill nobody budgeted for. Buyers who negotiate a bandwidth commitment without an overage cap discover this in month four.

What people use it for

  • A broadcaster or publisher running paid or ad-supported streaming who needs server-side ad insertion and studio-acceptable DRM rather than a basic player paywall.
  • A sports body streaming live fixtures to a global audience where redundancy, latency and geo-restriction matter more than the monthly platform fee.
  • A large corporation putting all product, training and internal communications video behind central governance with viewer-level analytics feeding a marketing automation system.
  • An organisation launching branded streaming apps across Roku, Apple TV and smart TVs without building and maintaining device clients in-house.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Brightcove.

  • Pricing is usage-based on plays, bandwidth and storage, so a piece of content that goes unexpectedly popular produces an overage bill nobody planned for, and the licence line in the contract is not the real cost.
  • Nothing is published, so a buyer cannot sanity-check a quote without running a full procurement, and quotes for similar workloads vary widely between customers.
  • Bending Spoons acquired the company in February 2025 and has an established pattern of cutting costs and raising prices on acquired software, so renewal terms after the current contract should not be assumed to resemble the first one.
  • The same owner also bought Vimeo in November 2025, so a Brightcove against Vimeo evaluation is no longer a comparison between independent suppliers and the vendor diversity a procurement team thinks it has may not exist.
  • It is heavier than most teams need; organisations that only want a hosted player, a few hundred videos and simple analytics pay for encoding, DRM and OTT infrastructure they will never enable.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Does Brightcove publish prices?

No. Everything is quoted against expected plays, bandwidth and storage. Reported customer spend ranges from the low tens of thousands to six figures a year.

Who owns Brightcove now?

Bending Spoons, which completed a 233 million US dollar acquisition in February 2025 and delisted the company from Nasdaq.

Is Vimeo a genuinely independent alternative?

No longer. Bending Spoons completed a 1.38 billion US dollar acquisition of Vimeo in November 2025, so both are owned by the same company.

What drives the cost most?

Delivery. Bandwidth and plays dominate the bill for any deployment with real audience volume, which is why an overage cap matters more than the headline tier.

Can it handle live sport?

Yes, with cloud DVR, redundancy and low-latency delivery, though live event capacity and latency targets are negotiated rather than standard.
