The short version
- Only Wistia has a free tier, so it costs nothing to try first.
- Each has a real cost: Brightcove pricing is usage-based on plays, bandwidth and storage, so a piece of content that goes unexpectedly popular produces an overage bill nobody planned for, and the licence line in the contract is not the real cost.; Wistia free plan caps at 25GB storage and a single user; removing Wistia branding and advanced analytics require the $79/month Business plan, per wistia.com, August 2026

Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Brightcove
- Pricing is usage-based on plays, bandwidth and storage, so a piece of content that goes unexpectedly popular produces an overage bill nobody planned for, and the licence line in the contract is not the real cost.
- Nothing is published, so a buyer cannot sanity-check a quote without running a full procurement, and quotes for similar workloads vary widely between customers.
- Bending Spoons acquired the company in February 2025 and has an established pattern of cutting costs and raising prices on acquired software, so renewal terms after the current contract should not be assumed to resemble the first one.
- The same owner also bought Vimeo in November 2025, so a Brightcove against Vimeo evaluation is no longer a comparison between independent suppliers and the vendor diversity a procurement team thinks it has may not exist.
- It is heavier than most teams need; organisations that only want a hosted player, a few hundred videos and simple analytics pay for encoding, DRM and OTT infrastructure they will never enable.
Wistia
- Free plan caps at 25GB storage and a single user; removing Wistia branding and advanced analytics require the $79/month Business plan, per wistia.com, August 2026

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Brightcove: Does Brightcove publish prices?
No. Everything is quoted against expected plays, bandwidth and storage. Reported customer spend ranges from the low tens of thousands to six figures a year.
Wistia: How much does Wistia cost?
Wistia offers a free plan with 25GB storage and 1 user. Paid plans start at $79/month for Business (250+ GB, 3+ users) and $329/month for Business + Lead Gen with marketing automation integrations.
SourceBrightcove: Who owns Brightcove now?
Bending Spoons, which completed a 233 million US dollar acquisition in February 2025 and delisted the company from Nasdaq.
Wistia: What are additional costs for Wistia users and storage?
Extra users on paid plans cost $25 each. Additional storage beyond plan limits, bandwidth overage ($0.20/viewer for webinars), and extra minutes ($2.00 each) incur charges.
SourceBrightcove: Is Vimeo a genuinely independent alternative?
No longer. Bending Spoons completed a 1.38 billion US dollar acquisition of Vimeo in November 2025, so both are owned by the same company.
Wistia: Does Wistia offer discounts for annual billing?
Yes, annual billing saves 20% compared to monthly pricing. The free plan requires no credit card and can be upgraded or downgraded anytime.
SourceBrightcove: What drives the cost most?
Delivery. Bandwidth and plays dominate the bill for any deployment with real audience volume, which is why an overage cap matters more than the headline tier.
Wistia: Can I cancel Wistia anytime?
Yes, you can cancel at the end of your billing cycle or immediately. No refunds are issued for cancellations, and storage usage includes both active account content and archived videos.
SourceBrightcove: Can it handle live sport?
Yes, with cloud DVR, redundancy and low-latency delivery, though live event capacity and latency targets are negotiated rather than standard.
