What Avid Media Composer does

Media Composer is Avid non-linear editing software, long established as the standard in broadcast television and feature film post-production. It edits to a strict media model, ingesting footage into managed MXF media rather than referencing files where they lie, and connects to Avid shared storage and media management systems for multi-editor productions. The commercially decisive fact is that the value sits in the workflow around the editor, not in the editor. Bin locking, shared project access, Avid NEXIS shared storage and MediaCentral asset management are what allow multiple editors, assistants and producers to work simultaneously on the same production without media conflicts. That is why a network series uses Avid, and why an individual editor cutting a corporate video gains almost nothing from it. Avid sells Media Composer on subscription and discontinued the free Media Composer First tier in 2021, so there is no longer a no-cost route to learning the application. The other trade-offs are craft related: effects and colour tools trail the competition, so facilities routinely round-trip to a separate finishing application, and the interface and keyboard model are unlike any other editor, meaning a hire from a Premiere or Resolve background needs weeks to become useful.
