The short version

  • Each has a real cost: MOVUS mOVUS is a small independent company, so standardising a large estate on its sensors carries supplier continuity risk that a purchase from a major instrumentation vendor does not.; Rockwell FactoryTalk factoryTalk is a brand, not a product, so a quote that says FactoryTalk may cover any of six separately licensed things; buyers repeatedly find that the demo they saw needed View plus Historian plus a Hub subscription.
  • They diverge on capability: MOVUS covers FitMachine sensor, Rockwell FactoryTalk covers FactoryTalk View SE and ME.
  • Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.

MOVUS

  • A mining operation instrumenting pumps and fans in a classified hazardous zone where cabled monitoring would require an outage and an electrical projectnot Rockwell FactoryTalk
  • A water utility with a small maintenance team that wants assessed alerts rather than a dashboard nobody has time to interpretnot Rockwell FactoryTalk
  • A food processing site adding condition monitoring to existing assets without production downtime, using magnetic mountingnot Rockwell FactoryTalk
  • An Australian operator that wants local support and local calibration data rather than a Northern Hemisphere vendor with a resellernot Rockwell FactoryTalk

Rockwell FactoryTalk

  • A plant standardised on ControlLogix that needs supervisory HMI without building and maintaining an OPC layer between controller and screennot MOVUS
  • A hybrid manufacturer needing ISA-88 batch execution audited against recipes, where FactoryTalk Batch is already validated in the industrynot MOVUS
  • Consolidating machine-level HMI screens across many Allen-Bradley lines under one tag model and one alarm schemenot MOVUS
  • Adding a plant historian quickly where the site has Rockwell distribution support but no PI administrator on staffnot MOVUS

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

MOVUS

  • MOVUS is a small independent company, so standardising a large estate on its sensors carries supplier continuity risk that a purchase from a major instrumentation vendor does not.
  • Support and service outside Australia and New Zealand depend on partners, which means response times, commercial terms and technical depth vary by country in ways the vendor cannot fully control.
  • Per-asset subscription plus per-asset hardware means the cost of full coverage rises linearly, so most sites end up monitoring a subset and leaving the long tail of small motors unmonitored.
  • The single condition score is designed for planners rather than analysts, which suits teams without vibration expertise but frustrates reliability engineers who want the underlying spectra to diagnose a specific defect.
  • Nothing is published on sensor cost, gateway requirements, subscription rate or contract term, so a realistic total cost for a site rollout cannot be estimated without a sales conversation.

Rockwell FactoryTalk

  • FactoryTalk is a brand, not a product, so a quote that says FactoryTalk may cover any of six separately licensed things; buyers repeatedly find that the demo they saw needed View plus Historian plus a Hub subscription.
  • Licensing units differ per product, tags for Historian, display tags and clients for View, another scheme for Optix, which makes forecasting the cost of a plant expansion genuinely hard.
  • The migration of products onto FactoryTalk Hub subscriptions converts what used to be a perpetual licence into an annual payment where lapsing stops the software, changing a capital purchase into an operating one you cannot exit.
  • Value drops sharply outside an Allen-Bradley estate; against a Siemens or Mitsubishi PLC you are back to OPC UA and lose the main reason to buy FactoryTalk at all.
  • There is no public price list and buying is through distribution, so two plants of identical size in the same company can pay materially different amounts depending on when and how they negotiated.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

MOVUS: Is there a hazardous area version?

Yes. The FitMachine 3XT EX is certified for hazardous zones, with availability from February 2026.

Rockwell FactoryTalk: Is FactoryTalk Historian the same as AVEVA PI?

It is built on the PI engine under an OEM arrangement, tuned for Rockwell integration. If you already run PI enterprise-wide, buying Historian too usually duplicates a system you have.

MOVUS: Do I get raw vibration data?

The product is built around an assessed condition score and reviewed alerts. Reliability engineers wanting full spectra should confirm what data access their contract includes.

Rockwell FactoryTalk: Can I still buy FactoryTalk perpetually?

Some products yes, but the direction is toward FactoryTalk Hub subscriptions. Confirm per product before assuming a capital purchase is available.

MOVUS: Does installation need an electrician?

No for the sensor, which mounts magnetically and runs on battery. Gateways typically need power and network, which is where the site work sits.

Rockwell FactoryTalk: Does FactoryTalk work with non-Rockwell PLCs?

Yes, through OPC UA and drivers, but the native tag browse advantage disappears and the case for FactoryTalk over a cheaper independent SCADA weakens.

MOVUS: Is MOVUS available outside Australia?

Yes, largely through partners including industrial services and insurance-linked risk programmes, with support quality varying by region.

Rockwell FactoryTalk: Where do I find pricing?

You cannot without a distributor. Rockwell publishes no list pricing for the FactoryTalk portfolio.
