The short version
- Each has a real cost: GoGuardian beacon generates alerts that a human must act on, often outside school hours, and districts that buy it without agreeing who responds at 11pm have created a liability rather than resolved one.; Skyward no pricing is published anywhere, so the only way to learn what a district of your size pays is to enter a sales cycle, and comparative quotes across vendors are hard to obtain before a board meeting deadline.
- They diverge on capability: GoGuardian covers Admin, Skyward covers Qmlativ SIS.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 31 August 2026.

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
GoGuardian
- A US district that must demonstrate CIPA-compliant filtering on federally subsidised broadband and wants the activity logs to survive an audit.not Skyward
- A one-to-one Chromebook programme where devices go home and the district needs the filtering policy to travel with the device rather than stop at the school gate.not Skyward
- A school with a documented safeguarding concern about self-harm that needs flagged language escalated to a named counsellor with a timestamped record.not Skyward
- A teacher running an online assessment who needs pupil browsers locked to a single site for the duration without provisioning a separate lockdown browser.not Skyward
Skyward
- A district of 8,000 students that wants payroll, position budgeting and the SIS on one vendor contract instead of paying an integrator to reconcile employee records nightlynot GoGuardian
- A Wisconsin or Texas district where state submission deadlines are the dominant compliance burden and prebuilt state packs remove weeks of extract worknot GoGuardian
- A district still on the older PaC client-server product deciding whether to migrate to Qmlativ or replace the SIS outrightnot GoGuardian
- A county government buying the finance and HR half on its own, separate from any school usenot GoGuardian
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
GoGuardian
- Beacon generates alerts that a human must act on, often outside school hours, and districts that buy it without agreeing who responds at 11pm have created a liability rather than resolved one.
- Detection is language-pattern based, so it produces false positives on coursework about difficult subjects and misses coded or oblique expressions, meaning it should never be presented to parents as a safety net.
- Filtering on school-issued devices follows pupils home, which surveils domestic internet use on a household's own connection, and districts have faced public objections when this was not disclosed clearly in advance.
- No pricing is published, and the multi-year reseller bundles make it hard to compare against a filtering-only competitor without running a full procurement.
- Coverage is strongest on Chrome OS and thinner on Windows, macOS and iOS, so mixed-device districts get uneven enforcement and end up running a second filtering product for the non-Chromebook estate.
Skyward
- No pricing is published anywhere, so the only way to learn what a district of your size pays is to enter a sales cycle, and comparative quotes across vendors are hard to obtain before a board meeting deadline.
- State reporting depth is uneven: the packs are excellent in the states where Skyward has a large installed base and thin elsewhere, so a district in a low-penetration state inherits reporting work the vendor absorbs for others.
- The third-party integration ecosystem is much smaller than PowerSchool's, so an edtech tool your teachers want may support the market leader first and Skyward months later or not at all.
- Two product generations are still live and the migration from PaC to Qmlativ is a project in its own right, meaning a district can be paying for a modernisation programme rather than new capability.
- Buying SIS and ERP from one vendor concentrates risk: a pricing increase, an ownership change or a product direction you dislike affects enrolment, payroll and the general ledger simultaneously, and unpicking that is a multi-year replacement rather than swapping one system.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
GoGuardian: Is GoGuardian required for CIPA compliance?
No. CIPA requires a filtering policy and technology, not a specific vendor. GoGuardian is one of several products that satisfy it.
Skyward: Was Skyward bought by PowerSchool?
No. Skyward remains an independent company based in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and competes directly with PowerSchool in the K-12 SIS market. It is one of the few SIS vendors of scale not owned by a private equity roll-up.
GoGuardian: Does Beacon monitor pupils at home?
On a school-issued managed device, yes, including outside school hours, unless the district explicitly limits the policy. This should be disclosed to families.
Skyward: Is pricing per student?
Yes, the student system is generally quoted per student per year with the finance suite priced separately, but no rate card is published and discounts vary heavily by district size and term length.
GoGuardian: Is Beacon included with Admin?
A starter level of Beacon is included with an Admin subscription. The 24/7 human triage service is a separate paid tier.
Skyward: Can we buy just the finance and HR suite?
Yes. School Business Suite is sold on its own, and there is a municipality edition for city and county government with no school component.
GoGuardian: Is Pear Deck part of the same licence?
No. Pear Deck Learning products are sold separately from the Admin, Teacher and Beacon suite even though the same company owns both.
Skyward: What is the difference between Qmlativ and PaC?
PaC is the older client-server generation and Qmlativ is the current browser-based product. New districts buy Qmlativ; existing PaC districts are being migrated.
GoGuardian: Can teachers view screens outside lesson time?
That depends on how the district configures sessions. Leaving screen viewing available at all hours is a configuration choice, not a product limitation, and it is the setting most worth reviewing.
