What GoGuardian does
GoGuardian, operated by Liminex, sells three connected products for school-issued devices. Admin is a web filter and activity log covering Chrome OS, Windows and macOS. Teacher gives an instructor a live grid of pupil screens during a lesson, with the ability to close tabs, lock to a set of sites and open a private chat. Beacon scans activity for language associated with suicide, self-harm and violence and escalates matches to designated staff, with a paid tier that routes urgent alerts to a human review team around the clock. The company also runs the Pear Deck Learning brand, which since January 2024 has covered Pear Deck, Pear Assessment (formerly Edulastic), Pear Practice (formerly Giant Steps) and Pear Deck Tutor (formerly TutorMe). What distinguishes it commercially is Beacon and the compliance framing around it. In the United States, the Children's Internet Protection Act requires filtering on federally subsidised connections, so filtering is a purchase districts must make. Beacon converts that mandatory purchase into a student safety story that a superintendent can defend publicly, and that is why Admin and Beacon are usually bought together. The consequence buyers underweight is operational: Beacon alerts arrive at all hours and someone has to respond, which is a counselling and safeguarding workload, not an IT one. Buyers are US K-12 district technology and student services teams, typically on multi-year bundles sold through resellers as three, four or five year Admin plus Teacher plus Beacon packages. The trade-off is surveillance scope. - Detection is language-pattern based, so it produces false positives on coursework about difficult subjects and misses coded or oblique expressions, meaning it should never be presented to parents as a safety net.
- Filtering on school-issued devices follows pupils home, which surveils domestic internet use on a household's own connection, and districts have faced public objections when this was not disclosed clearly in advance.
- No pricing is published, and the multi-year reseller bundles make it hard to compare against a filtering-only competitor without running a full procurement.
- Coverage is strongest on Chrome OS and thinner on Windows, macOS and iOS, so mixed-device districts get uneven enforcement and end up running a second filtering product for the non-Chromebook estate.

Does Beacon monitor pupils at home?
On a school-issued managed device, yes, including outside school hours, unless the district explicitly limits the policy. This should be disclosed to families.
Is Beacon included with Admin?
A starter level of Beacon is included with an Admin subscription. The 24/7 human triage service is a separate paid tier.
Is Pear Deck part of the same licence?
