The short version
- Each has a real cost: Foursquare Spatial Studio unfolded no longer exists as a product or a contracting entity, so buyers researching under that name find documentation, pricing discussion and comparison material that no longer applies to what Foursquare sells; Global Mapper it is Windows only with no macOS or Linux build, so mixed-platform teams end up running a virtual machine and lose graphics performance on large point clouds
- They diverge on capability: Foursquare Spatial Studio covers Browser rendering at scale, Global Mapper covers Format breadth.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Foursquare Spatial Studio
- A retail property team comparing catchment overlap between candidate sites using hexagonal aggregation rather than drive-time polygonsnot Global Mapper
- A telecommunications planner visualising a national dataset of measurements in the browser without building a tile pipelinenot Global Mapper
- An analytics team that already writes deck.gl in-house and wants a hosted environment so non-developers can explore the same datanot Global Mapper
- A marketing group that wants Foursquare places and movement data joined to its own customer geography in one toolnot Global Mapper
Global Mapper
- A survey office that receives lidar in a different format from every client and needs reliable conversion without writing scriptsnot Foursquare Spatial Studio
- A consultancy that wants to classify ground points and extract building footprints from a drone survey without an Esri enterprise agreementnot Foursquare Spatial Studio
- An organisation with an irregular workload that wants to buy the licence outright and skip maintenance in quiet yearsnot Foursquare Spatial Studio
- A geologist producing volumes, contours and cross sections from terrain data on a standalone office workstationnot Foursquare Spatial Studio
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Foursquare Spatial Studio
- Unfolded no longer exists as a product or a contracting entity, so buyers researching under that name find documentation, pricing discussion and comparison material that no longer applies to what Foursquare sells
- Pricing is not published at all, and because access to Foursquare datasets can be bundled into the same agreement, separating the cost of the software from the cost of the data requires explicitly asking for a split quote
- Much of the visualisation capability exists in kepler.gl and deck.gl, which are free and open source, so the paid product must justify itself on hosting, collaboration and data rather than on rendering
- Foursquare's core business is selling location data, which means the analytics roadmap follows what makes that data sell, and a customer using only its own data is not the priority segment
- It is analysis and visualisation, not a spatial database or an editing environment, so organisations still need PostGIS, a warehouse or a GIS for the authoritative data and its maintenance
Global Mapper
- It is Windows only with no macOS or Linux build, so mixed-platform teams end up running a virtual machine and lose graphics performance on large point clouds
- The interface has grown by accretion over two decades and features are scattered across menus, so new users are slow to find capabilities that are already installed
- Node-locked perpetual licences are tied to the machine identifier, so a hardware refresh or a failed workstation means a support request rather than a login on a new device
- Multi-user and web publishing are weak relative to Esri or QGIS with a server stack, so it is a desktop analysis tool and not a platform for sharing data across an organisation
- Published prices apply to North America and differ elsewhere, so buyers outside that market must go through a reseller and cannot rely on the listed figures for budgeting

Questions people ask
- Is Foursquare Spatial Studio or Global Mapper better?
- Neither clearly leads. Foursquare Spatial Studio starts at On request and Global Mapper at $700/one-time, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Foursquare Spatial Studio or Global Mapper?
- Foursquare Spatial Studio starts at On request and Global Mapper at $700/one-time.
- Does Foursquare Spatial Studio or Global Mapper run on more platforms?
- Foursquare Spatial Studio runs on Web. Global Mapper runs on Windows.
- What is Foursquare Spatial Studio best used for?
- Foursquare Spatial Studio is most often used for a retail property team comparing catchment overlap between candidate sites using hexagonal aggregation rather than drive-time polygons, a telecommunications planner visualising a national dataset of measurements in the browser without building a tile pipeline, an analytics team that already writes deck.gl in-house and wants a hosted environment so non-developers can explore the same data, a marketing group that wants foursquare places and movement data joined to its own customer geography in one tool. Of those, a retail property team comparing catchment overlap between candidate sites using hexagonal aggregation rather than drive-time polygons and a telecommunications planner visualising a national dataset of measurements in the browser without building a tile pipeline are not what Global Mapper is typically brought in for.
- What can Foursquare Spatial Studio do that Global Mapper cannot?
- Foursquare Spatial Studio covers Browser rendering at scale, H3 spatial indexing, Data joins, Time animation. Global Mapper covers Format breadth, Lidar processing, Pixels to Points, Coordinate transformation.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Foursquare Spatial Studio: Can I still buy Unfolded?
No. Foursquare acquired Unfolded in 2021 and sells the product as Foursquare Spatial Studio. There is no Unfolded contract.
Global Mapper: Is there still a perpetual licence?
Yes. Blue Marble sells perpetual node-locked, floating, dongle and network licences that keep working after maintenance lapses.
Foursquare Spatial Studio: Is kepler.gl the same thing?
No. kepler.gl is the free open source visualisation library from the same original team. Spatial Studio is the hosted commercial platform built around it.
Global Mapper: What is the difference between Standard and Pro?
Pro is an add-on to a matching Standard licence and carries the lidar classification, feature extraction, Pixels to Points photogrammetry and advanced terrain tools.
Foursquare Spatial Studio: What does it cost?
Foursquare does not publish pricing. Ask for the software and the data licences to be quoted separately.
Global Mapper: Do I have to pay maintenance?
Only for the first year, which is included. After that it is optional; without it the software continues to run but you receive no upgrades or support.
Foursquare Spatial Studio: Do I need Foursquare's data to use it?
No, you can load your own, but the commercial proposition is strongest for customers who also want the places and movement datasets.
Global Mapper: Can it replace ArcGIS?
For desktop format conversion, lidar and terrain analysis, often yes. For enterprise data management, web services and organisation-wide sharing, no.
