The short version
- Each has a real cost: Emerson Ovation nothing about the cost is published, and the licence is a minority of the total; engineering, I/O hardware and commissioning commonly exceed it, so a budget built from a software quote will be wrong by a large multiple.; Yokogawa CENTUM VP there is no published price list and no way to size a budget without engaging Yokogawa or an EPC, so early-stage comparison against DeltaV or Experion is guesswork until quotations arrive.
- They diverge on capability: Emerson Ovation covers Power application libraries, Yokogawa CENTUM VP covers Field Control Station.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Emerson Ovation
- Replacing an end-of-life control system on a coal or gas unit during a planned outage, where the vendor must supply turbine control as well as plant controlnot Yokogawa CENTUM VP
- A municipal water authority standardising treatment plant control across several sites under one NERC-adjacent security regimenot Yokogawa CENTUM VP
- An IPP wanting the DCS and the safety instrumented system engineered in the same tool rather than integrated across two vendorsnot Yokogawa CENTUM VP
- Hydro operators needing IEC 61850 and DNP3 into a control system that also runs the balance of plantnot Yokogawa CENTUM VP
Yokogawa CENTUM VP
- Replacing end-of-life CENTUM CS 3000 controllers during a refinery turnaround without pulling field cablingnot Emerson Ovation
- Greenfield LNG train where the control and safety systems must share one operator console and one event lognot Emerson Ovation
- Specialty chemicals batch plant needing sequence control with recipe management and full electronic batch recordsnot Emerson Ovation
- Combined cycle power station where 99.99999 percent availability figures are written into the contractnot Emerson Ovation
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Emerson Ovation
- Nothing about the cost is published, and the licence is a minority of the total; engineering, I/O hardware and commissioning commonly exceed it, so a budget built from a software quote will be wrong by a large multiple.
- Ovation is power and water specific, so a group operating both power stations and chemical plants will end up running Ovation alongside DeltaV or a third-party DCS and paying for two engineering skill sets.
- The annual support and subscription contract is effectively mandatory: without it you lose access to security patches, which for a NERC CIP regulated asset is not a decision you can defer.
- Replacement is bounded by outage windows rather than by budget, so a decision to leave Ovation typically takes multiple years and cannot be reversed cheaply once started.
- Third-party engineering capability is much thinner than for Rockwell or Siemens platforms, so you are largely dependent on Emerson or a small partner pool for changes, and their day rates set the cost of every future modification.
Yokogawa CENTUM VP
- There is no published price list and no way to size a budget without engaging Yokogawa or an EPC, so early-stage comparison against DeltaV or Experion is guesswork until quotations arrive.
- Engineering and commissioning routinely cost several times the hardware and software, and owners who budget from the equipment quote alone are consistently short.
- The ecosystem is closed: controllers, I/O and diagnostics are Yokogawa, and third-party alternatives at the controller layer do not exist, so the vendor holds pricing power for the twenty years or more the plant runs.
- Operator stations run on Windows and are tied to specific validated Windows releases, so operating system end-of-life forces console refresh cycles that are governed by Yokogawa validation rather than by your IT policy.
- Engineering staff who know CENTUM are scarce outside Japan, the Middle East and South East Asia, and in North America and Europe you will pay a premium or depend on Yokogawa’s own services organisation for changes.
Pricing, plan by plan
Emerson Ovation
On request- Ovation Automation Platform$undefined/year
- Priced by controller count, I/O point count and operator workstation
- Hardware, engineering and commissioning quoted with the software
- Annual support and subscription contract sold separately
Yokogawa CENTUM VP
On request- CENTUM VP$undefined/year
- Priced as an engineered system, not a per-seat licence
- Cost driven by I/O count, controller redundancy and number of operator stations
- Engineering, FAT, commissioning and training quoted separately and usually exceed hardware

Questions people ask
- Is Emerson Ovation or Yokogawa CENTUM VP better?
- Neither clearly leads. Emerson Ovation starts at On request and Yokogawa CENTUM VP at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Emerson Ovation or Yokogawa CENTUM VP?
- Emerson Ovation starts at On request and Yokogawa CENTUM VP at On request.
- Does Emerson Ovation or Yokogawa CENTUM VP run on more platforms?
- Both run on Windows, On-premise, so platform support will not decide this one for you.
- What is Emerson Ovation best used for?
- Emerson Ovation is most often used for replacing an end-of-life control system on a coal or gas unit during a planned outage, where the vendor must supply turbine control as well as plant control, a municipal water authority standardising treatment plant control across several sites under one nerc-adjacent security regime, an ipp wanting the dcs and the safety instrumented system engineered in the same tool rather than integrated across two vendors, hydro operators needing iec 61850 and dnp3 into a control system that also runs the balance of plant. Of those, replacing an end-of-life control system on a coal or gas unit during a planned outage, where the vendor must supply turbine control as well as plant control and a municipal water authority standardising treatment plant control across several sites under one nerc-adjacent security regime are not what Yokogawa CENTUM VP is typically brought in for.
- What can Emerson Ovation do that Yokogawa CENTUM VP cannot?
- Emerson Ovation covers Power application libraries, Ovation SIS, Embedded historian, NERC CIP tooling. Yokogawa CENTUM VP covers Field Control Station, N-IO, Human Interface Station, ProSafe-RS integration.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Emerson Ovation: Is Ovation the same as DeltaV?
No. Ovation targets power generation and water; DeltaV targets chemicals, life sciences and refining. They are separate products with separate engineering tools and separate support organisations.
Yokogawa CENTUM VP: Can I upgrade from CENTUM CS 3000 without rewiring the plant?
Yes. Yokogawa sells migration packages that replace the controller and keep existing field wiring and marshalling, which is the main reason CENTUM installations stay CENTUM.
Emerson Ovation: Can I get a price without talking to Emerson?
No. There is no published price list, no trial and no self-service configurator. Every Ovation number comes through Emerson or a certified partner.
Yokogawa CENTUM VP: Is CENTUM VP sold as a subscription?
No. It is a capital purchase of hardware and licences with an annual service agreement for updates and support.
Emerson Ovation: Does Ovation 4.0 mean I can stop buying Emerson hardware?
No. The software-defined architecture virtualises controllers, but the I/O and field interfaces are still Emerson hardware and are still the bulk of the equipment cost.
Yokogawa CENTUM VP: How does it compare with Emerson DeltaV on cost?
Neither publishes prices. CENTUM tends to win on brownfield migration cost because the field wiring stays; DeltaV tends to be cheaper on small greenfield systems.
Emerson Ovation: What decides the price?
Controller count, I/O point count and the number of operator workstations, plus the engineering hours to configure the control logic for your plant.
Yokogawa CENTUM VP: Do I need a separate safety system?
Yes, for SIL-rated functions. ProSafe-RS is the Yokogawa SIS and shares the CENTUM engineering database and operator console.
