The short version

  • Each has a real cost: Arena PLM no pricing is published, and third-party figures circulating online range from roughly $1,000 to $3,000 per user per year, which tells you the spread is wide and the quote is entirely negotiated.; JobBOSS² the product is a merger of two legacy systems, so existing JobBOSS and E2 customers face a migration and retraining project whose cost is negotiated case by case and is easy to underestimate.
  • They diverge on capability: Arena PLM covers BOM and AML management, JobBOSS² covers Estimating and quoting.
  • Prices and features above were last checked on 31 August 2026.

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

Arena PLM

  • No pricing is published, and third-party figures circulating online range from roughly $1,000 to $3,000 per user per year, which tells you the spread is wide and the quote is entirely negotiated.
  • PTC acquired Arena in 2021 and its strategic PLM is Windchill, so Arena occupies the lower end of a portfolio and a buyer should assume the upgrade path out of Arena is a migration, not an expansion.
  • Licensing is tiered by user type, and read-mostly participants such as manufacturing or purchasing staff still consume paid seats, so organisations with many occasional viewers pay more per useful user than the headline suggests.
  • CAD integration is file and metadata level rather than deep design management, so teams wanting in-CAD check-in and check-out with full configuration control will find it thinner than Windchill or Teamcenter.
  • It is cloud-only multi-tenant with no self-hosted option, so defence, ITAR-sensitive or air-gapped programmes need to confirm data residency and access controls before it clears procurement.

JobBOSS²

  • The product is a merger of two legacy systems, so existing JobBOSS and E2 customers face a migration and retraining project whose cost is negotiated case by case and is easy to underestimate.
  • ECI is a private equity owned portfolio company with many vertical products, and buyers should read renewal, uplift and support tier terms carefully because the commercial model is built around long term contracted revenue.
  • Machine connectivity is limited, so shop floor data comes from operators clocking in and out rather than from controllers, and any automatic utilisation measurement needs a separate monitoring product.
  • Reporting is rigid compared with a modern system and most shops end up exporting to Excel for anything beyond the supplied reports, which reintroduces the spreadsheets the system was bought to eliminate.
  • The user interface carries its lineage and takes longer to learn than a current generation web application, which matters most for occasional users such as estimators and purchasing staff.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

Arena PLM: Is Arena still sold separately from PTC Windchill?

Yes. PTC sells and develops Arena under its own name and positions it for cloud-first small and mid-size manufacturers, with Windchill for large enterprise deployments.

JobBOSS²: What happened to E2 Shop System?

ECI acquired it and merged it with JobBOSS into the combined JobBOSS² line. Legacy customers are directed towards migration.

Arena PLM: Does Arena publish pricing?

No. It is quoted per named user per year, tiered by user role and by whether the quality module is included.

JobBOSS²: Is it cloud based?

It is offered hosted and on premises. Hosted is not the same as a cloud native architecture, and performance expectations should be set accordingly.

Arena PLM: Can I run Arena on my own servers?

No. It is multi-tenant cloud only.

JobBOSS²: Does it include accounting?

Yes, accounting is part of the product, which is one of the main reasons small shops choose it over an ERP plus separate finance package.

Arena PLM: Is it validated for FDA use?

Arena supplies validation documentation and supports 21 CFR Part 11 workflows, but validating your specific configured use remains your responsibility.

JobBOSS²: Can it read data from my CNC machines?

Not natively in any meaningful way. Data collection is operator driven, so shops wanting spindle level data buy a monitoring platform alongside it.
