A monitoring server for networks, hosts, services and applications that carries no per-device licence fee, funded instead by paid support contracts from the Latvian company that develops it. Softwr lists it under Networking. Zabbix is made by Zabbix SIA, available on Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Web.

What Zabbix does
Zabbix collects metrics by agent, SNMP, IPMI, JMX, HTTP and script, stores them in a relational database, evaluates trigger expressions against them, and escalates alerts through configurable action chains. Templates carry items, triggers, discovery rules and dashboards as reusable units, and low-level discovery creates monitored entities automatically as interfaces, filesystems and services appear. Zabbix proxies collect on remote sites and buffer through connectivity loss, which is how it scales across branch networks and customer estates. The commercial shape is unusual for this market. There is no node count, no device tier and no metric limit, so a managed service provider monitoring twenty thousand interfaces pays nothing in licence. Revenue comes from support subscriptions, training and integration work sold by Zabbix SIA in Riga. Starting with version 7.0 the licence changed from GPLv2 to AGPLv3, which closes the network use loophole and creates a real question for anyone offering Zabbix as part of a hosted service or bundling it inside an appliance. The buyers are network operations teams, service providers and enterprises that have priced a commercial alternative per device and refused it. The trade-off is that the saved licence fee reappears as database administration. Zabbix history and trend tables grow quickly at high polling rates, housekeeping is a known bottleneck, and serious deployments end up on PostgreSQL with TimescaleDB partitioning plus a person who understands it. That person costs more than a small commercial licence.

- The database is the scaling limit, and high frequency polling grows history tables fast enough that untuned installations hit housekeeping stalls and query timeouts within months.
- Initial configuration is heavy; getting useful alerting rather than noise requires understanding trigger expressions, macros and template inheritance, which is a multi-week learning curve for a team new to it.
- The AGPLv3 change at version 7.0 affects anyone offering Zabbix over a network as part of a commercial service, and that obligation is easy to inherit accidentally during an upgrade.
- The web interface is functional rather than pleasant, and many sites end up running Grafana alongside it purely for presentation, which is a second system to maintain.
- Upgrades between major versions touch the database schema and can take hours on large history tables, so the maintenance window is proportional to how much data you kept.
