A monitoring agent that installs on a host, discovers what is running and produces per-second charts within a minute, doing anomaly detection at the edge rather than in a central time series database. What Netdata does

Netdata runs an agent on each node that collects thousands of metrics at one-second resolution, autodetects hundreds of common services without configuration, stores data locally in a tiered database engine, and trains machine learning models per metric on the node itself to flag anomalies. Nodes can stream to a parent for retention and aggregation, and Netdata Cloud provides a single view across a fleet without centralising the raw metrics. The distinguishing decision is that processing stays at the edge. There is no ingestion pipeline to size, no central store to shard and no per-metric ingest cost, because each node holds its own history and the aggregation layer queries them. That inverts the economics of high-cardinality monitoring, where hosted vendors bill per metric or per series and a chatty Kubernetes cluster produces an unpleasant invoice. It also means retention is bounded by disk on the node unless you build a parent tier. The licensing detail buyers should know is that the agent is GPLv3 but the dashboard interface shipped since version 1.41 is under a restrictive Netdata licence and is served from Netdata infrastructure by default. The software is not fully open source in the way its reputation suggests, and air-gapped installations need deliberate configuration to serve the interface locally. Buyers are platform and SRE teams that want dense host visibility fast; the trade-off is that Netdata is excellent at what is happening on a node right now and weaker as a long-horizon capacity planning archive.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Netdata.

  • The dashboard interface is under a restrictive Netdata licence rather than GPL and is served from Netdata infrastructure by default, so the deployment is not fully self-contained without extra configuration.
  • Retention is limited by disk on each node unless you build and maintain a parent tier, which makes it a poor archive for year-over-year capacity planning.
  • Per-second collection consumes noticeable CPU and memory on small or heavily loaded nodes, and on constrained edge hardware the monitoring becomes part of the problem.
  • Default alerting is generous and fires on conditions many teams consider normal, so the first weeks involve pruning alarms rather than responding to them.
  • Fleet-level features that make it usable across hundreds of nodes sit in Netdata Cloud, so the free agent alone leaves you visiting individual node dashboards.

Can it run without any connection to Netdata Cloud?

Yes, agents work standalone and dashboards can be served locally, but you lose fleet-wide views and need to configure local interface serving deliberately.

Does it replace Prometheus?

For host and container infrastructure metrics it often does. For custom application metrics with an existing exporter ecosystem and long retention, most teams keep both.
