What WizTree does

WizTree finds what is using space on a Windows drive by reading the NTFS master file table directly. That file is the index NTFS already maintains of every file on the volume, so instead of opening thousands of folders in turn, WizTree reads one structure and has the whole picture. A drive that takes another analyser several minutes is finished in a few seconds. Results are shown as a sortable tree, a file list and a treemap, and the file list alone, every file on the volume sorted by size, answers most questions immediately. Speed is the entire product, and it comes with a condition attached: it only applies to local NTFS volumes. Network shares, exFAT and FAT32 drives, ReFS volumes and anything reached over a protocol rather than a device fall back to conventional directory scanning, at which point the tool is comparable to its competitors rather than an order of magnitude faster. Buyers who evaluate it on a local SSD and then deploy it against a file server are surprised. The licence needs stating plainly. WizTree is free for personal use only. Any business or commercial use requires a paid licence, sold per user with volume tiers and site options, quoted rather than usefully published. Organisations that install the free build across company machines are out of compliance, which is precisely the trap that makes TreeSize Free or WinDirStat the pragmatic choice in a workplace, both of which permit commercial use at no cost.

The speed advantage exists only on local NTFS volumes; network shares, exFAT, FAT32 and ReFS fall back to ordinary directory scanning and lose the advantage entirely.
Reading the master file table requires administrator rights, so it cannot be used by standard users on managed machines without an elevation policy.
It is Windows only, with no macOS or Linux build, so a mixed estate needs a second tool anyway.
It analyses one machine at a time with no scheduling or central reporting, so it is a diagnostic tool rather than a way to manage storage across an organisation.
