What Google Lens does

Google Lens takes a photo or live camera feed and returns identification results: what a plant or animal is, translated text overlaid on a foreign menu or sign, a solved homework problem, a shoppable match for an item of clothing or furniture, or a copied block of text from an image. It is built into the Google app, Google Photos, the camera app on most Android phones and Chrome image search. Its commercial angle is shopping and search, not a direct fee. When Lens identifies a product, it can surface where to buy it and at what price, which is part of Google's retail search and ads business, and product-identification results frequently link to sponsored listings alongside organic ones. It has no in-app purchase or subscription and generates no direct revenue from the user. Buyers are effectively every Android and Google app user, since it is bundled rather than separately installed in most cases. iOS users access it inside the Google app or Google Photos. The trade-off is less about cost and more that image recognition of this kind means photos and camera frames pass through Google's systems for analysis, which is worth knowing for anyone photographing sensitive documents or private items.
