What TreeSize does
TreeSize scans Windows drives, folders and network shares and reports what is consuming space, with sizes rolled up through the folder tree and views by file type, age and owner. JAM Software sells it in tiers: TreeSize Free covers the basic question of where the space went, TreeSize Personal and Professional add file search, duplicate detection, exports and charts, and TreeSize Enterprise adds scheduled scans across servers with reporting for storage administrators. The licence is what distinguishes the free edition. JAM Software permits commercial use of TreeSize Free, so an IT department can deploy it across a company without buying anything, which is not true of several better-known free tools in this category. The paid tiers earn their price on different work: scanning file servers over the network with permissions intact, finding duplicates across shares, reporting on file age for archiving decisions, and producing the size-by-owner reports that precede a quota conversation. The trade-offs are speed and platform. TreeSize walks the directory structure, so it works on network shares, cloud-synced folders and non-NTFS volumes, but it is slower than tools that read the NTFS master file table directly. It is Windows only. And the tier boundaries are placed so that individually useful features, duplicate search, exports, scheduled scans, sit above the free line, so many buyers find that the one feature they actually need pushes them two tiers up. Pricing is per licence and is quoted by the vendor rather than being a single published figure worth repeating.

Is TreeSize Free really free for business use?
Yes. JAM Software licenses the free edition for private and commercial use, which is the main reason it appears on corporate machines where other free analysers are not permitted.
Why is it slower than WizTree?
Method. WizTree reads the NTFS master file table; TreeSize walks the directory tree, which is slower but works on network shares and non-NTFS volumes.
Can it scan a NAS or Linux file server?
It scans them as network shares over SMB, with the speed penalty that implies. There is no agent that runs on the server itself.
What does the Enterprise tier add?
