Kpler: The closest direct competitor on seaborne commodity flow data, with broader coverage beyond energy into dry bulk and other commodities.

Real-time seaborne energy cargo flow data sold as a subscription to a feed, not an application
As of 1 September 2026, Vortexa's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. What you buy from Vortexa is a data subscription: where every crude, product, LPG and LNG cargo is, where it came from and where it is going. Softwr lists it under Maritime. Vortexa is available on Web, Cloud, API.
Overview
Vortexa is a London company that tracks waterborne energy cargoes in real time. It combines AIS vessel positions, satellite imagery, port and terminal data and cargo intelligence to infer what each tanker is carrying, at what grade, loaded where and discharging where, then aggregates that into flow, floating storage and freight analytics. Coverage spans crude oil, refined products, LPG and LNG across all vessel classes, and the company added port-to-port freight pricing in 2025. The distinction a buyer must be clear about is that Vortexa is a data business, not an application business. Its web terminal exists, but the product is really the feed: an API, an Excel add-in and a Python SDK that push flow data into a trading desk's own models, risk systems and spreadsheets. That shapes the buying decision entirely. You are not evaluating workflow or usability so much as coverage, latency, the accuracy of cargo inference on the grades and routes you care about, and how the licence treats redistribution of derived numbers inside your own firm. Buyers are oil traders, shipowners and charterers, refiners, hedge funds and commodity analysts. The trade-off is cost and overlap. Market data subscriptions of this kind are priced by seat and by data scope, quoted, and sit alongside existing spend on Kpler, price reporting agencies and terminal services that partly duplicate the same picture. Cargo attribution is also inference, not measurement, so figures are estimates with an error band that matters when a position is sized on them.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Vortexa.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Kpler: The closest direct competitor on seaborne commodity flow data, with broader coverage beyond energy into dry bulk and other commodities.

MarineTraffic: If you only need vessel positions and port calls rather than inferred cargo composition, at a fraction of the cost.

Windward: For risk, sanctions and behavioural analysis on vessels rather than commodity flow economics.

Capabilities
Cargo-level flow tracking
Individual cargo movements by grade, origin and destination rather than aggregate trade statistics
Multi-commodity coverage
Crude, refined products, LPG and LNG across all vessel classes
Floating storage analytics
Identifies oil held at sea, a signal that moves crude spreads
API, Excel and Python access
Designed to feed a trading desk's own models rather than to be read on a screen
Anywhere Freight Pricing
Port-to-port freight price estimates for routes without a published benchmark rate
Satellite and AIS fusion
Combines positional and imagery data to handle vessels that go dark or spoof position

Fundamentally a data feed. There is a web terminal, but the API, Excel add-in and Python SDK are how most subscribers actually use it.
Estimated. Vortexa infers cargo, grade and volume from AIS, satellite imagery and pattern analysis. Treat the numbers as estimates with an error band.
By seat and by data scope, quoted annually. Redistribution and derived-data rights are negotiated separately and matter for internal use.
Yes, alongside crude and refined products, though commodity scope affects what you pay.
