What Plex Manufacturing Cloud does

Plex is a manufacturing ERP delivered only as multi-tenant cloud software, combining shop floor execution, quality management, inventory, supply chain and financials in one system. It came out of the automotive supply base in Michigan and its design assumptions reflect that: operators work at terminals on the production line, traceability is expected to be complete, and quality documentation is treated as a first-class part of production rather than as a reporting afterthought. Rockwell Automation acquired the company in 2021, which placed it alongside Rockwell's industrial automation, maintenance and analytics products. The distinguishing feature is that there is one version of the software and every customer is on it. That is unusual in ERP and it has real commercial consequences in both directions. It removes the upgrade project entirely, which is the single largest recurring cost in traditional ERP ownership and the reason so many manufacturers run software a decade old. It also removes your ability to decide when your system changes, and it constrains customisation to what the platform's own configuration and extension tools allow, because nothing you build can be permitted to block the next release for everyone else. Buyers who understand this trade the freedom to modify for the freedom from upgrades. Buyers who do not understand it try to reproduce a legacy process exactly and are frustrated. The buyer is a discrete manufacturer, most commonly automotive tier one and tier two, aerospace, industrial products or food processing, running one or several plants, and generally one that has a real shop floor control problem rather than only an accounting problem. The trade-offs are the depth of the finance module against operations, the limited international localisation compared with the tier one vendors, and the absence of any on premise option, which rules the product out for plants that will not depend on connectivity for line-side operation. There is also the ownership question: as part of Rockwell, the product's direction is now shaped by an automation vendor's strategy rather than by an independent ERP roadmap.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Plex Manufacturing Cloud.

There is no on premise option, so a plant whose line-side terminals must keep working through a network outage needs a mitigation plan, and connectivity becomes a production dependency rather than an IT concern.
Every customer runs the same version on the vendor's schedule, so you cannot defer a release to fit around a plant shutdown or a customer audit and must absorb regression testing on the vendor's cadence.
Customisation is limited to the platform's own configuration and extension tools, which is what makes the single version model possible but means a process you cannot express within those tools has to change rather than be accommodated.
The financial modules are less developed than the operational ones, so groups with complex multi-entity consolidation, statutory reporting in several countries or sophisticated planning requirements often keep a separate finance system alongside it.
Country localisations and language coverage are narrower than the tier one vendors offer, which limits the product for a manufacturer expanding into markets with demanding local tax and reporting rules.

Can I run Plex on my own servers?

No. It is delivered as multi-tenant cloud software only. If you need an on premise deployment, this product cannot meet that requirement at any price.

What happens to my customisations at upgrade time?

There are no customisations in the traditional sense. Extensions are built with the platform's own tooling and are carried forward by the vendor. That is the trade you are making: less freedom to modify, no upgrade project.
