ParentSquare

Unified school to home messaging across text, email, app and voice with automatic translation

As of 31 August 2026, ParentSquare's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. ParentSquare consolidates the several separate channels a district uses to reach families into one record of every message sent and received. Softwr lists it under Education. ParentSquare is made by ParentSquare (PowerSchool), available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What ParentSquare does

ParentSquare is a school to home communication platform used by districts in the United States. It sends announcements, teacher posts, attendance and emergency notices across text message, email, mobile app and automated voice call, choosing the channel by family preference, and logs delivery so staff can see who was actually reached. Messages translate automatically into the language recorded for each family, and replies come back into the same thread rather than into a personal teacher inbox. What separates it from a mass notification tool is that it is two way and threaded at classroom level. Teachers post to their own class, families reply, and the district retains the whole exchange as a record. That matters commercially because it collapses three or four line items, an emergency notification system, a translation service, a classroom messaging app and a conference booking tool, into one contract, and because a district that has moved family conversation into the platform cannot leave without losing the history. The ownership change is the fact that should change a shortlist. PowerSchool agreed to acquire ParentSquare in late 2024, months after Bain Capital took PowerSchool private, so districts that chose ParentSquare specifically to avoid deepening a PowerSchool relationship now have one. Buyers are district communications directors and superintendents rather than IT. The trade off is that engagement data becomes a management surface. The platform reports which families opened what, and that reporting can drift from helping families toward measuring teachers. Contracts are FERPA aligned with the vendor acting as a school official, and message content that includes pupil detail carries the same handling obligations as the student record itself.

What people use it for

  • A district running separate emergency notification, translation and classroom messaging contracts that wants one bill and one record
  • Schools with a large share of families whose first language is not English and where reply rates in English are low
  • Evidencing reach after an emergency closure, where the board asks how many families were actually contacted
  • Moving teacher to parent conversation off personal mobile numbers for safeguarding reasons

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about ParentSquare.

  • PowerSchool acquired the company in 2024, so a district that deliberately chose an independent communications vendor now depends on the incumbent student records vendor, and future integration favouritism is a reasonable concern.
  • Automatic translation is machine translation. It is adequate for routine notices and unreliable for disciplinary, special education or legal language, where a mistranslation has consequences the district owns.
  • Adoption is uneven by design. If some teachers post and others do not, families receive an inconsistent picture and start contacting the school by other channels anyway, which defeats the single record argument.
  • Engagement dashboards make individual teacher posting frequency visible to leadership, and districts that use that as a performance measure damage the goodwill the tool depends on.
  • Switching cost is high in an unusual way. The valuable asset is the conversation history attached to individual pupils and families, and exports of threaded two way messages are far less useful than the live system.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is it FERPA and COPPA aligned?

ParentSquare contracts as a school official under FERPA and takes direction from the district. Pupil accounts, where enabled, run under district consent rather than parental consent for COPPA purposes.

Does the PowerSchool acquisition change our contract?

Existing terms run to their end date, but renewals now sit with PowerSchool sales, and districts should expect bundling pressure at renewal rather than standalone pricing.

Can it replace our emergency notification system?

It sends voice, text and email at scale, so most districts do replace one. Confirm the voice call throughput commitment in writing before cancelling a dedicated notification contract.
