As of 31 August 2026, NetBird is free to use. A peer to peer overlay network built on WireGuard, released under a permissive licence and offered either as a hosted service or as a stack you run yourself. Softwr lists it under Networking. NetBird is made by NetBird GmbH, available on Linux, macOS, Windows, iOS.
Overview
NetBird builds an encrypted overlay network between machines using WireGuard for the data plane and its own management, signal and relay services for coordination. Peers authenticate through an identity provider over OIDC, connect directly where NAT traversal allows and fall back to relays where it does not, and access between them is governed by policies written against users and groups rather than IP ranges. The code is published under a permissive BSD licence. What distinguishes it from the obvious alternative is that the control plane is open and self hostable in full, not as a cut down community build. Tailscale is easier and more polished but its coordination server is proprietary, and Headscale reimplements it without vendor blessing; NetBird ships the real thing. Commercially that matters to anyone whose network cannot depend on a third party control plane, because it removes the argument that self hosting means running someone elses reverse engineered server. Buyers are engineering teams replacing a legacy VPN concentrator, and regulated organisations that need the coordination layer inside their own boundary. The trade-off is operational: the hosted service gives you a maintained global relay footprint, an identity integration that already works and someone to call, and self hosting means you also run an identity provider, relays and the uptime of the thing that admits new peers to the network.

Similar model and similar clients, but Tailscale keeps its coordination server proprietary. NetBird publishes its whole control plane, which is the reason most self hosters choose it.
No inbound ports are required. Peers make outbound connections to the signal service and to each other.
On a self hosted deployment, nothing, since you run every component. On the cloud service you would need to stand up your own control plane and re-enrol peers.
