What Find My does

Find My combines what used to be two separate Apple apps, Find iPhone and Find Friends, into one: locating a user's own Apple devices on a map, marking a lost device and remotely locking or erasing it, tracking AirTags and third party Find My network accessories, and sharing live location with specific people who mutually agree to share back. It is free and preinstalled on every iPhone, iPad and Mac, with no subscription tier, funded as part of the broader value of owning Apple hardware rather than sold separately. Location sharing between people requires mutual opt-in, meaning both parties must agree to share, and either can stop sharing at any time; a person cannot be silently tracked via Find My's people-sharing feature without their consent at setup, though a hidden AirTag placed on a person or vehicle without their knowledge is a different, and documented, misuse case Apple has added anti-stalking alerts to address. Buyers are Apple device owners by default rather than an active purchase decision. The trade-off is standard for Apple's ecosystem: it works well and only within Apple's own devices and accessories, and it has no cross-platform equivalent for tracking non-Apple hardware or people using Android.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Find My.

It only works within Apple's own device and accessory ecosystem, so it cannot locate Android phones or non-Apple trackers.
People location sharing requires both parties to have Apple devices and an iCloud account, which limits it in mixed-platform families or groups.
AirTags and the Find My network have been documented as a stalking tool when hidden on a person or vehicle without their knowledge, and while Apple has added unknown-tracker alerts, the underlying misuse risk is real and has prompted lawsuits and product changes over time.
Remote erase on a lost device is permanent and cannot be undone if the device is later recovered, so users need to be certain before using it.
It depends on other nearby Apple devices for offline location via the Find My network, so location accuracy in areas with few Apple device users nearby can be poor.
