What Causal does
Causal is a financial planning and analysis tool built around a different modelling primitive from a spreadsheet. Instead of formulas referencing cells, you define named variables with explicit time dimensions and breakdowns, so a single line such as revenue equals customers times price expands automatically across months, regions and product lines. Ranges and probability distributions are first-class, so a model can carry uncertainty rather than three separate best, base and worst tabs. It connects to accounting, CRM and warehouse sources to pull actuals and publishes interactive dashboards non-finance stakeholders can adjust inputs on. The fact that should change a shortlist is ownership. Lucanet, a German CFO software group, acquired Causal on 31 October 2024, and the product now sits in the Lucanet CFO Solution Platform as Lucanet xP&A. The causal.app pricing page redirects to Lucanet, and the roadmap, pricing and commercial terms are set by Lucanet rather than the original team. Anyone evaluating Causal on the strength of its startup-era self-serve pricing and product velocity is evaluating something that no longer exists in that form. Buyers were finance teams at venture-backed companies and mid-market firms who found Excel models unmaintainable and Anaplan-class tools too heavy and too slow to implement. The trade-off now is a straightforward acquisition risk calculation: the underlying modelling engine is genuinely better than a spreadsheet for scenario work, but you are buying into an enterprise CFO suite whose commercial motion, pricing and support model are not the ones Causal was known for.

- Causal was acquired by Lucanet on 31 October 2024 and the independent brand has been retired in favour of Lucanet xP&A, so the roadmap, support and pricing you buy are Lucanet’s and not the ones the product built its reputation on.
- Self-serve pricing is gone: the old causal.app pricing page now redirects to a Lucanet solution page, so what was a transparent product you could sign up for is an enterprise sales conversation with no published rate.
- The variable-based model is a genuine departure from spreadsheet thinking, so an accountant fluent in Excel must relearn how to express a model, and the team members who could previously all edit the forecast often cannot at first.
- Deep Excel compatibility is limited by design; complex existing workbooks with macros, circular references or heavy lookups do not import cleanly and have to be rebuilt, which turns a tool evaluation into a modelling project.
- Consolidation, statutory reporting and multi-entity currency handling are weaker than in dedicated corporate performance management suites, so a group with several legal entities usually needs Lucanet’s other modules alongside it, raising the real cost well past the planning tool alone.

Can I import my existing Excel model?
