Reactive JavaScript framework with no virtual DOM

The short version

  • Each has a real cost: Kustomize no packaging or distribution story, which is exactly what Helm charts provide; SolidJS much smaller ecosystem than React, so many problems have no off-the-shelf library
  • They diverge on capability: Kustomize covers Overlay patching, SolidJS covers No virtual DOM.

What people use each for

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.

Kustomize

  • Managing dev, staging and production variants of the same manifestsnot SolidJS
  • Keeping manifests readable and directly applyable rather than templatednot SolidJS
  • Patching third-party manifests without forking themnot SolidJS

SolidJS

  • Interfaces where update performance is the binding constraintnot Kustomize
  • Teams comfortable with React syntax who want finer-grained reactivitynot Kustomize
  • Applications where bundle size directly affects the businessnot Kustomize

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

Kustomize

  • No packaging or distribution story, which is exactly what Helm charts provide
  • Deeply nested overlays become hard to follow, and reasoning about the final output requires building it
  • No release lifecycle: nothing tracks what is installed or supports rollback the way Helm does
  • Patch syntax is fiddly for anything beyond simple field replacement

SolidJS

  • Much smaller ecosystem than React, so many problems have no off-the-shelf library
  • The React-like syntax is misleading: components run once, and React habits produce subtle bugs
  • Smaller hiring pool and fewer learning resources than the mainstream frameworks

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

Kustomize: Is Kustomize free?

Yes, open source and part of the Kubernetes project.

SolidJS: Is SolidJS free?

Yes, open source under the MIT licence.

Kustomize: Kustomize or Helm?

Kustomize patches plain YAML and keeps bases readable; Helm templates and packages applications with a release lifecycle. Many teams use both — Helm to install third-party charts, Kustomize to patch them.

SolidJS: Is SolidJS just React without the virtual DOM?

The syntax is similar but the model is not. Solid components run once and reactivity is fine-grained, so patterns that are correct in React can be wrong in Solid.

Kustomize: Do I need to install Kustomize?

No. It is built into kubectl, available through kubectl apply -k.

SolidJS: Why is SolidJS fast?

It compiles away much of the framework and updates individual DOM nodes directly, rather than re-rendering components and diffing a virtual DOM.
