The short version
- Each has a real cost: esbuild deliberately does not type-check TypeScript, only strips types, so tsc still runs separately; Typesense holding the index in memory caps dataset size by available RAM, which becomes expensive at scale
- They diverge on capability: esbuild covers Very fast builds, Typesense covers In-memory index.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 29 August 2026.
Where they differ
Only the attributes on which esbuild and Typesense actually diverge.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
esbuild
- Build pipelines where bundle time is the bottlenecknot Typesense
- Libraries and tools needing a fast, embeddable bundlernot Typesense
- Replacing slower bundlers where the plugin ecosystem is not needednot Typesense
Typesense
- Replacing Algolia when per-search pricing outgrows the valuenot esbuild
- Instant search over a product catalogue or documentation sitenot esbuild
- Hybrid keyword and vector search without running two systemsnot esbuild
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
esbuild
- Deliberately does not type-check TypeScript, only strips types, so tsc still runs separately
- Plugin API is far narrower than webpack or Rollup, and complex builds hit its limits
- Code splitting support has historically lagged the more established bundlers
- Frequently used indirectly through Vite, so direct use is a narrower need than the download numbers suggest
Typesense
- Holding the index in memory caps dataset size by available RAM, which becomes expensive at scale
- Narrower than Elasticsearch by design: no log analytics or complex aggregation pipelines
- Smaller ecosystem and community than Algolia or Elasticsearch, so fewer integrations exist off the shelf

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
esbuild: Is esbuild free?
Yes, open source under the MIT licence.
Typesense: Is Typesense free?
The engine is open source and free to self-host. Typesense Cloud is a paid managed option.
esbuild: Does esbuild type-check TypeScript?
No. It strips types for speed and does not check them. Run tsc separately if you need type checking.
Typesense: Why choose Typesense over Algolia?
Cost and control. Algolia charges per search and per record; Typesense can be self-hosted with no per-query fee, at the cost of running it yourself.
esbuild: Do I need esbuild if I use Vite?
You already have it. Vite uses esbuild internally for dependency pre-bundling and transforms.
Typesense: Does Typesense support vector search?
Yes, including hybrid search combining keyword and semantic matching in one query.
