The short version
- Each has a real cost: esbuild deliberately does not type-check TypeScript, only strips types, so tsc still runs separately; Turbopack effectively coupled to Next.js; using it standalone is not the supported path
- They diverge on capability: esbuild covers Very fast builds, Turbopack covers Incremental computation.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
esbuild
- Build pipelines where bundle time is the bottlenecknot Turbopack
- Libraries and tools needing a fast, embeddable bundlernot Turbopack
- Replacing slower bundlers where the plugin ecosystem is not needednot Turbopack
Turbopack
- Large Next.js applications where rebuild time is the daily costnot esbuild
- Teams already on Vercel’s stack wanting faster local feedbacknot esbuild
- Migrating off webpack within Next.js without changing frameworksnot esbuild
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
esbuild
- Deliberately does not type-check TypeScript, only strips types, so tsc still runs separately
- Plugin API is far narrower than webpack or Rollup, and complex builds hit its limits
- Code splitting support has historically lagged the more established bundlers
- Frequently used indirectly through Vite, so direct use is a narrower need than the download numbers suggest
Turbopack
- Effectively coupled to Next.js; using it standalone is not the supported path
- Younger than the alternatives, and ecosystem plugin support is narrower than webpack’s
- Benchmark claims have been contested publicly, so measure on your own project rather than trusting headline numbers
- Being Vercel-driven ties its roadmap to one company’s framework priorities

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
esbuild: Is esbuild free?
Yes, open source under the MIT licence.
Turbopack: Is Turbopack free?
Yes, open source from Vercel.
esbuild: Does esbuild type-check TypeScript?
No. It strips types for speed and does not check them. Run tsc separately if you need type checking.
Turbopack: Can I use Turbopack without Next.js?
Not really. It is developed as the Next.js bundler, and standalone use is not the supported path.
esbuild: Do I need esbuild if I use Vite?
You already have it. Vite uses esbuild internally for dependency pre-bundling and transforms.
Turbopack: Is Turbopack faster than Vite?
It depends on the project, and published comparisons have been disputed by both sides. Measure on your own codebase rather than relying on headline figures.
