The short version
- Each has a real cost: Chemaxon the October 2024 Certara acquisition ended two decades of vendor neutrality, and organisations that embedded JChem precisely because Chemaxon competed with nobody now depend on a component owned by a company that sells into their accounts.; Seven Bridges the parent merged into Velsera in 2023 alongside Pierian and UgenTec, so the platform now competes for roadmap attention with clinical interpretation and diagnostics products inside a private equity owned group.
- They diverge on capability: Chemaxon covers Marvin, Seven Bridges covers Trusted research environment.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 31 August 2026.

Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Chemaxon
- The October 2024 Certara acquisition ended two decades of vendor neutrality, and organisations that embedded JChem precisely because Chemaxon competed with nobody now depend on a component owned by a company that sells into their accounts.
- Licensing is genuinely complicated, with different terms for named users, servers, desktop applications and embedded redistribution, so working out what you are allowed to deploy usually requires a conversation rather than reading a document.
- The free academic package is granted for two-year terms and covers education rather than research, so a research group that assumed it was free discovers it needs a paid commercial academic licence.
- Nothing is priced publicly for commercial use, so a team evaluating Chemaxon against open source alternatives such as RDKit cannot compare total cost without entering a sales process.
- Open source cheminformatics has closed much of the functional gap for basic structure handling and search, so the commercial case increasingly rests on prediction quality, support and registration workflows rather than on capability that cannot be obtained elsewhere.
Seven Bridges
- The parent merged into Velsera in 2023 alongside Pierian and UgenTec, so the platform now competes for roadmap attention with clinical interpretation and diagnostics products inside a private equity owned group.
- Pricing is not published and splits into a platform subscription plus consumption-based cloud compute, so a heavy analysis quarter produces a bill that headcount-based budgeting does not anticipate.
- The analysis capability itself has credible open source equivalents in Nextflow and Cromwell on raw cloud, so you are principally paying for compliance and governance rather than for the science.
- Pipelines are built around Common Workflow Language, which is a real learning curve and a portability commitment for teams whose existing work is in other workflow languages.
- Cloud storage of large genomic datasets accrues continuously whether or not you are analysing, and egress charges apply when moving results out, both of which are outside the subscription line.

Questions people ask
- Is Chemaxon or Seven Bridges better?
- Neither clearly leads. Chemaxon starts at On request and Seven Bridges at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Chemaxon or Seven Bridges?
- Chemaxon starts at On request and Seven Bridges at On request.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Chemaxon: Is Chemaxon still independent?
No. It has been a subsidiary of Certara since October 2024. The products continue under the Chemaxon name.
Seven Bridges: Is Seven Bridges still sold?
Yes. It is sold by Velsera, formed in 2023 when Summa Equity merged Seven Bridges with Pierian and UgenTec. The Seven Bridges name was retained for the platform.
Chemaxon: Is the academic licence really free?
The education package is free for two-year terms covering a class or faculty. Non-commercial research groups pay a discounted commercial academic licence.
Seven Bridges: What compliance does it hold?
FedRAMP Moderate, SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR, dbGaP and ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701, which is the usual reason institutions choose it over building on raw cloud.
Chemaxon: Can I ship Chemaxon inside my own software?
Yes, but embedded redistribution is licensed separately from internal use and must be negotiated.
Seven Bridges: How is it priced?
Not published. Expect a platform subscription plus consumption charges for cloud compute and storage.
Chemaxon: How does it compare with RDKit?
RDKit is free and covers basic structure handling well. Chemaxon differentiates on property prediction, registration workflows, the sketcher and commercial support.
Seven Bridges: Do I have to use a specific cloud?
No. The platform is cloud-agnostic and designed to bring analysis to where the data already resides.
