Sight Machine
Manufacturing
Enterprise manufacturing data platform that builds a plant data model rather than a dashboard

The short version
- Each has a real cost: Avathon the company rebranded from SparkCognition to Avathon and narrowed its focus after repeated reported layoff rounds, so reference checks and roadmap commitments made under the old name need reconfirming.; Sight Machine onboarding is a data engineering project measured in months per plant, so value arrives long after the contract starts and the internal sponsor needs the patience and budget to survive that gap.
- They diverge on capability: Avathon covers Renewable Suite, Sight Machine covers Unified plant data model.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Avathon
- A wind fleet owner wanting underperforming turbines ranked by lost megawatt hours rather than by alarm countnot Sight Machine
- A solar independent power producer detecting inverter and string underperformance that falls below the SCADA alarm thresholdnot Sight Machine
- A manufacturer with years of historian data and failure records who wants failure prediction models trained on their own historynot Sight Machine
- A site using cameras to detect missing personal protective equipment or unauthorised entry into restricted zonesnot Sight Machine
Sight Machine
- A corporate operations team that cannot compare plant performance because every site defines a stoppage differentlynot Avathon
- A manufacturer whose historian data is plentiful but has never been modelled into anything a business can querynot Avathon
- A group standardising manufacturing reporting into a cloud data warehouse alongside finance and supply chain datanot Avathon
- A quality organisation investigating a defect that appears at several plants with different equipmentnot Avathon
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Avathon
- The company rebranded from SparkCognition to Avathon and narrowed its focus after repeated reported layoff rounds, so reference checks and roadmap commitments made under the old name need reconfirming.
- Headcount is in the low hundreds against a product portfolio spanning renewables, vision, predictive maintenance and document AI, which is thin coverage per product line for enterprise support expectations.
- Model accuracy depends on having enough labelled historical failures, and sites with short data history or poor maintenance record-keeping get generic anomaly detection rather than useful failure prediction.
- Nothing is published about pricing or asset-count thresholds, so there is no way to judge whether a small fleet is even a viable customer without entering a sales cycle.
- It sits on top of your SCADA and CMMS rather than replacing them, so the integration and asset-hierarchy mapping work is a real project cost that the software subscription does not cover.
Sight Machine
- Onboarding is a data engineering project measured in months per plant, so value arrives long after the contract starts and the internal sponsor needs the patience and budget to survive that gap.
- It assumes the instrumentation already exists, so a plant whose machines produce no usable data gets nothing from a data platform and needs to solve connectivity first with a different class of product.
- Pricing scales with plants and data volume and is never published, which puts it out of reach for single site manufacturers regardless of how relevant the capability sounds.
- It is not an MES and does not control or execute anything, so it sits on top of the operational systems and adds a layer to maintain rather than replacing one.
- Success depends on a central team that owns definitions and enforces them, and in groups where plants retain autonomy the standardisation the platform provides gets quietly ignored at site level.

Questions people ask
- Is Avathon or Sight Machine better?
- Neither clearly leads. Avathon starts at On request and Sight Machine at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Avathon or Sight Machine?
- Avathon starts at On request and Sight Machine at On request.
- Does Avathon or Sight Machine run on more platforms?
- Avathon runs on Web, Cloud. Sight Machine runs on Web, API.
- What is Avathon best used for?
- Avathon is most often used for a wind fleet owner wanting underperforming turbines ranked by lost megawatt hours rather than by alarm count, a solar independent power producer detecting inverter and string underperformance that falls below the scada alarm threshold, a manufacturer with years of historian data and failure records who wants failure prediction models trained on their own history, a site using cameras to detect missing personal protective equipment or unauthorised entry into restricted zones. Of those, a wind fleet owner wanting underperforming turbines ranked by lost megawatt hours rather than by alarm count and a solar independent power producer detecting inverter and string underperformance that falls below the scada alarm threshold are not what Sight Machine is typically brought in for.
- What can Avathon do that Sight Machine cannot?
- Avathon covers Renewable Suite, Loss attribution, Predictive maintenance models, Computer vision. Sight Machine covers Unified plant data model, Broad ingestion, Cross plant benchmarking, Root cause analysis.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Avathon: Is this the same company as SparkCognition?
Yes. SparkCognition rebranded to Avathon and refocused on industrial and government asset AI.
Sight Machine: Is this an OEE product?
It can produce OEE, but buying it for OEE alone is expensive. The reason to buy it is cross plant data standardisation.
Avathon: Which product is most mature?
The renewable energy suite for wind and solar underperformance, which has the longest production deployment history.
Sight Machine: Does it need a historian?
It reads from historians, control systems and MES. Some source of machine data is a prerequisite.
Avathon: Does it need my historian data in the cloud?
Generally yes for model training and ongoing scoring, which is a security review item for utility and defence customers.
Sight Machine: How long does a plant take to onboard?
Plan in months per plant, depending on how many sources and how inconsistent the existing definitions are.
Avathon: Can it work without historical failure records?
It will still do anomaly detection, but failure prediction models need labelled historical failures to be worth the deployment cost.
Sight Machine: Who is the buyer?
A corporate manufacturing, quality or digital function. It is rarely a plant level purchase.
