What Read the Docs does
Read the Docs builds and hosts documentation, most commonly from Sphinx or MkDocs sources. It watches a repository, rebuilds on every commit, and serves versioned documentation keyed to branches and tags — so a project’s v2 and v3 docs coexist with no manual work. It hosts open-source projects free, which is why an enormous share of Python documentation lives there. The versioning and pull request previews are the parts teams miss when they self-host.
