MadCap Flare is a single-source authoring tool: technical writers build topic-based content once and publish it to HTML5 help sites, PDF, Word, and other formats, with conditional text and variables to manage content differences across product versions or audiences without maintaining separate source files. It runs as a desktop application (Flare Desktop) or through a browser-based cloud authoring environment (Flare Online). Commercially, Flare has moved to a subscription-only model: Flare Desktop is $3,150 per author per year, and Flare Online is licensed per user, billed annually, with a stated 12-month minimum commitment; MadCap no longer sells the perpetual licence it once did, which matters to a buyer who previously budgeted documentation tooling as a one-time capital cost. Online tiers (Individual, Team, Business) scale reviewer seats and storage with team size but are all quote-only above the base Desktop price. Buyers are technical writing teams, often in enterprise software, medical device, financial services or engineering documentation, that need single-source, multi-format publishing without going as far into full CCMS territory as Paligo.
