What Qubes OS does

Qubes OS is a desktop operating system built on the Xen hypervisor in which everything you do runs inside a virtual machine, called a qube. Applications are created from templates, usually Fedora, Debian or Whonix, so many qubes share one root filesystem while keeping separate home directories. The administrative domain has no network access at all, network hardware and USB controllers are given to dedicated qubes so their drivers cannot reach your data, and windows are drawn with coloured borders that identify which qube owns them. Copying text or files between qubes is an explicit two-step action rather than a background convenience. What it sells is containment rather than prevention. A compromised browser in a disposable qube ends when you close the window, and a malicious USB device attacks the USB qube instead of the system. The Whonix templates route a qube through Tor at the network layer, so an application inside it cannot leak the real address even if it tries. Nothing else on the desktop offers this shape of isolation with an interface an ordinary user can operate. The requirements are the reason most evaluations end early. Qubes needs hardware virtualisation and an IOMMU, which many consumer laptops disable or implement badly; the official memory floor is unrealistic and 16GB is the practical minimum with 32GB preferred; an SSD is effectively required. The certified hardware list is a handful of models from small vendors, and outside it wifi, suspend and firmware behaviour are unpredictable. There is no GPU passthrough for the desktop, so every qube renders without acceleration: video calls stutter, 3D and games are out, and battery life is noticeably shorter than the same laptop running a normal Linux install. The buyers are journalists, security researchers, lawyers and people with genuine adversaries, who accept all of that in exchange for the containment model.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Qubes OS.

  • Hardware compatibility is the first and usual failure: an IOMMU is mandatory, and most business laptops fail on wifi passthrough, firmware quirks or suspend even when the CPU supports virtualisation.
  • There is no GPU acceleration inside qubes, so video conferencing, media playback, 3D work and games are poor to unusable, and this rules the system out for most general-purpose users.
  • Memory is consumed per qube, so 16GB is the working floor and a normal day with a browser, email, work and a disposable qube open will exhaust an 8GB machine.
  • Battery life is substantially shorter than the same laptop running a conventional Linux install, because several VMs and their drivers are running continuously.
  • Backups are whole-VM images rather than files, so restores are slow, storage requirements are large, and pulling a single document out of a backup is more work than it should be.

Will it run on my laptop?

Check the hardware compatibility list first, and prefer a certified model. VT-x or AMD-V alone is not enough; you need VT-d or AMD-Vi as well, and many consumer machines either omit it or implement it badly.

Can I run Windows in a qube?

Yes, with Qubes Windows Tools, but the integration is less complete than the Linux templates and has historically broken across Windows updates. Treat it as a workaround, not a supported desktop.

How much RAM do I actually need?

16GB to work comfortably, 32GB if you keep many qubes running. The published minimum will boot the system but not support a normal working day.

Is it usable as an only computer?

For text, email, browsing and code, yes. For video calls, media production or anything needing a GPU, no, and most users keep a second machine for those tasks.
