What Podcastle does

Podcastle records remote interviews in the browser, capturing each participant locally so the final audio does not depend on connection quality, then edits the result through a transcript rather than a waveform. It adds text to speech, voice cloning, background noise removal and video clip export for social distribution. The commercially interesting fact is the bundling. The usual stack for this work is a remote recorder, a separate transcript editor and a separate synthetic voice vendor, each billed monthly. Podcastle collapses those into one plan, which is cheaper and simpler to administer, and worse at each individual job. For a solo producer or a small marketing team publishing weekly, that trade is usually correct; for a studio with a house sound, it is not. Buyers are independent podcasters, in-house content teams and agencies producing interview shows at volume. The trade-off is control: the editor is transcript-first, so precise multitrack work, music beds and loudness targets need a real audio application afterwards.

Voice cloning quality falls off sharply on accented, noisy or lightly clipped source audio, so the feature that justifies the upgrade tends to fail exactly on the recordings that need it.
Local recording depends on the guest keeping the browser tab open and the machine awake; if they close it early you fall back to the compressed live stream and lose the quality the whole approach was for.
Recording hours, transcription and AI generation are metered per plan, so a heavy month can exhaust the allowance in the middle of a production run.
The editor has no real multitrack precision, so music beds, crossfades and broadcast loudness targets require exporting to a proper audio application anyway.
Podcastle does not publish what its voice models were trained on, which is a problem for publishers who must warrant the provenance of synthetic audio to advertisers or broadcasters.

Does it record locally or over the connection?

Each participant is recorded locally in their browser and the files are uploaded afterwards, so a poor connection degrades the live monitor rather than the final audio.

Can I clone a voice without the speaker present?

You should not. Cloning requires a consent recording from the speaker, and using a cloned voice commercially without documented permission is a legal exposure regardless of what the tool allows.

Is it enough on its own to publish a show?

For a talk or interview format, yes. For anything with layered music, sound design or a strict loudness deliverable, you will finish elsewhere.
