What LottieFiles does
LottieFiles builds tooling for Lottie, the JSON-based vector animation format that began life as the Bodymovin exporter for Adobe After Effects. The platform covers a browser editor, plugins for After Effects and Figma, a compressed multi-animation container called dotLottie, hosted delivery, and player SDKs for web, iOS, Android, React Native and Flutter. The distinguishing point is that the asset is never locked to the vendor. The Lottie schema is open and the player libraries are permissively licensed, so an animation exported today keeps rendering if the subscription lapses or the company disappears. That inverts the usual creative-tools risk calculation: the commercial question is not whether you can leave, it is whether the handoff, versioning and review workflow is worth paying for once more than two people touch the animations. Buyers are product and mobile teams replacing GIFs and short videos with vector animation that ships at a few kilobytes, and marketing teams that want the same asset on a web page and inside an app. The trade-off is feature coverage: Lottie supports a subset of After Effects, and each platform renderer implements a slightly different part of that subset, so an animation that is correct in After Effects can render wrong on Android and right on iOS with no error anywhere.

- Using the hosted CDN puts a third-party request in your page or app load path; self-hosting removes that dependency but also removes the versioning and analytics that justified the subscription.
- The browser editor still does not replace After Effects for character work or complex effects, so most studios keep an Adobe subscription running alongside it and pay for both.

Do I need After Effects to produce Lottie files?
No. Lottie Creator and the Figma plugin both output Lottie directly. Character animation and anything using complex effects still goes through After Effects.
Is the format proprietary?
No. The Lottie JSON schema and the player libraries are open source under permissive licences and dotLottie is an open container, so files keep working after you stop paying.
Why does the same file look different on Android?
Each platform ships its own renderer with its own level of feature support. Test the exact file on every target rather than trusting the After Effects preview.
