As of 1 September 2026, Longhorn is free to use. Free replicated block storage for Kubernetes that installs in minutes and needs no storage array. Softwr lists it under Cloud. Longhorn is made by Cloud Native Computing Foundation, available on Linux, Kubernetes.
Overview
Longhorn is a distributed block storage system for Kubernetes. It creates a dedicated storage controller per volume and synchronously replicates each volume across nodes, so a node failure does not take the data with it. It provides snapshots, backups to S3-compatible object storage or NFS, volume expansion, and a web user interface for managing it all. It was created by Rancher Labs, donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and is an incubating project there. The distinguishing property is simplicity relative to the alternatives. Ceph is a storage platform with its own operational discipline; Longhorn is a Helm chart that turns local disks into replicated persistent volumes and is understandable by a team that does not employ a storage engineer. That makes it the default choice for edge clusters, on-premises Kubernetes without a SAN, and homelab or small production workloads. The trade-off is the support question, and it is the one that decides adoption. As a CNCF project Longhorn has no vendor, no SLA and no paid escalation path; you get GitHub issues and a Slack channel. SUSE offers commercial support for Longhorn as part of its Rancher Prime subscription, and that is the only realistic answer for an organisation that needs someone accountable when a volume will not attach at three in the morning.

Full copies, so three replicas means three times the raw capacity. Budget accordingly rather than assuming erasure coding efficiency.
For modest workloads yes, but synchronous replication adds write latency and high-transaction databases usually want something faster.
